New Build - CPU Overheating

We just redid my girlfriend's computer last night. We upgraded to the following parts:

AsRock Z97 Killer Fatal1ty Motherboard
Intel i5 4690
EVGA GTX 780 3GB

We got Windows installed and had just finished doing the GPU drivers when it died. We tried again - same thing. It didn't seem consistent, we could get further sometimes, but it always died in the end.

Inside the bios menu, we saw the CPU at like 98. Way too high from my knowledge. We did some searching around and there seem to be conflicting arguments on what to do or how to handle this.

My girlfriend (Who's been doing the hardware side of things) has an additional problem now: She took the CPU fan off and can't seem to get it to lock back on. Is this a known issue as well?

Assuming the fan can be reattatched okay, what do we do? Neither one of us have reapplied thermal paste, and we don't have any sitting around. Is it possible that we didn't seat it right the first time and it isn't making contact with the thermal paste? Yes, it's possible. Do we just tighten the hell out of it and try it again?

What would you guys advise?

That's what we think might be the issue, but the fact that we can't get the fan back on is making it difficult to be 100% sure.
Yes, the fan was working.

I'll try that.

How much contact should it be making? We do see thermal paste on the cpu, so we know there's contact. It's not much paste, but there's some on it.

When placing the cpu cooler, make sure the clips aren't in lock position. Lock it once you think it is lined up with the holes.
Are you installing your cpu cooler outside a case?

Nope, it's inside, right above the CPU.

I would suggest taking the motherboard out of the case and install the cpu cooler outside a case since it is easier.

We will give that a stab.

In the meantime, since we can't do it until tonight, is there anything else you'd recommend?

Also, thank you, you're helping a lot. I appreciate it.

If the fan still won't work, what type of third party fan would be compatible?

That would all depend upon how big your case is, though the usual one to recommend is the Hyper 212 from Cooler Master.

But short of fitting in my case, what would I look for as far as compatibility with the cpu and motherboard? I'm hoping to go to a local store today to buy one and I don't know if they'll have any specific brands.

Every decent case manufacturer lists the specifications for their case, including the maximum cooler size. Every remotely decent cooler manufacturer lists the specifications for their products, including the height. Just compare the two.

Also, why don't you just order one online? Failing that, phone your local store before you go.

It is a know issue if you take things apart willy nilly that you have no clue how to put back together. Sorry. Before you take anything apart you should note how it is attached.

We managed to get the fan back on. It's not an issue anymore. There's still overheating though, so I think we're going to

a) replacing the processor
b) thermal paste
c) another fan

All of those combined have to yield some sort of results, right?

If anyone else has other suggestions, we'll certainly take them. Thank you.

First of all, you really need to learn what you are doing before you go spending money and possibly destroying expensive equipment. Here is a very simple video on how to install the stock cooler on an intel CPU

or you could watch this more in depth one:

But most importantly, don't just go jumping in to something like this without doing research. You found this website easily enough, so I am stumped as to why you did not even Google the basics of PC upgrading before you attempted this.

Also, for the love of god please tell me you have thermal paste between the CPU and the heatsink... Because from your little A, B, C list there, it seems like you don't. If you struggle with the basics then please, please, go see a professional and get them to do it.

That's a lot of bold assumptions. We've done computer work before.

I can tell you didn't read the first post, otherwise youd tell there is thermal paste. Yes.

I think we've got enough information for now, thank you to those who helped
