Yeah USB is backwards compatible. You will need USB 3.1 cables and a USB 3.1 capable device to get those speeds.

That build looks good but there are a couple of things I would suggest differently - mainly the cooler. I would also add a mass storage drive and maybe lose the BD-R burner. Those are becoming less of a necessity every day.

Thanks so much for you answer. Another question.

The ASUS ROG Maximus X Hero has 3.1 gen 2 usb front port while the case only has 2 3.0 and 2 2.0 usb ports on the front panel. Can I plug the 3.1 gen 2 into the front 3.0 port? Will it have the higher speed capabilities?

Thank you

The MOBO USB 3.1 ports are different than the ones on the case. The mobo ones are already integrated, but the ones on the case used certain connectors to be powered on. They are completely separate USB ports. Plug your device into the motherboard ports (the ones in the I/o shield) and you get 3.1 capabilities. Plug them into the respective usb ports on the case and you only get the capabilities of that type of port. The motherboard doesn't "upgrade" the ports. At least that's what my case is showing me.
