New build gpu at jan 2010 prices ??

Have built a I7-920, P6T,6gig ram, caviar black HD, 850 cosair psu

I will be running 1920x1080 on 23" lcd

might toy with some first person games this year but mostly in past have done online ones.

I am lost as to cost/benefit for cards. The prices seem to be changing daily.

these are cards posts say I should look at for that resolution.

tonights prices
5770 @ $180
4890 @ $210
5850 @ $300
nvidia gxt260 @ $220

at that resolution should i just get the cheapest one the 5770 and when prices come down in summer get a faster card?
reviews rate the 5770 as only good at that resolution and about same or worse as 4870 but can be overclocked close to 4890 I read.

or spend the extra $100 for a 5850 which is rated as excellent for that resolution?

or does this really matter for future online games? I do recall vanguard crashing everyones computer due to graphics.

I am uncertain what to do.

I can not wait on nvidia possible release in 2nd qtr.

any advice?

I think if u have the money then take HD5850 right now, and u can add another 5850 later when the price goes down...

well for online games any one of those cards will do more than fine with that resolution and cpu.

I am using a GTS 250 and a much weaker CPU, and a screen with the same resolution, and it is running fine.

I would not go for the older ATI, 4950, as the new ones all have native support for DX11.

The GTX260 with that cpu will run crysis maxed out with 4x AA and be playable with good framerates, and consider that the most popular online games are games like COD and WoW etc. the true multiplayer games are not as demanding as many singleplayer games. any one of those cards will max out any current multiplayer games and will achieve very good framerates. (50 +)

it all comes down to how much money you wish to spend.

I would reccomend the 5770 or GTX260. both perform about equal in 3dmark vantage, but it 3dmark 06 the GTX260 stands out by about 1000 points

dont worry about the games crashing due to graphics, with any card your rig will be more than powerful enough

If you want to spend the extra 40 $ for 1000 more points in 3dmark 06 then go for the GTX260, otherwise just go for the 5770.

I agree with wa1 and plan on doing the same thing myself as soon as I get the funds. DX11 is worth it in my opinion and will add longevity to your system. Check out these vids on what it has to offer...

@OP if your not bothered about DX11 then go with the HD4890 as it performs better than a GTX260 for $10 less

If you want DX11 then I'd highly recommend the HD5850 for your resolution.

+1 more for the 5850. It really gives you the all around best performance for your money $300 gets you alot of GPU power to run that display. If you want to try your hand at overclocking you can get the 5850 to run at 5870 speeds as well.

Seeing as you have a i7 system. I find it hard to recommend lower than a 5850. Even a 5870 with an i7 is almost always GPU bound, but you probably will end up using it's power down the road by adding a 2nd one in the future.

If you start out with a 5770, then add one later, it really feels like you've wasted all that i7's power. Even if you start with them in CF.

But if you start with the 5850, and later add a 2nd one later, now the system can really spread it's wings and perform to it's true potential.

Going the cheap route just feels wrong, because it then means you wasted money on the i7, unless you have other purposes it's being used for.

And that's w/ a game with minimal incorporation of DX11 technology and which the authors state is barely distinguishable from DX11 to DX9.

Actually, from what I've gathered, and seen in another game that added DX11 features, most of the new directX 11 features are performance increases. Tessellation, is the exception, which happens to be one of the few features Dirt 2 added.

Mostly, directX 11 will improve performance, unless the dev's go crazy with tessellation.
