Hi everyone, I am new here although a long time lurker. I am building a home server that I plan to do some virtualization. Here are the specs of my build. Please let me know what you think, or any parts I should consider changing/improving. Thanks

I have a case coming in as well. I was originally going to get the i7-2600 since I didnt feel I needed the extra gpu support that comes with the K on a server. I ended up getting it cause of the great deal I got when bundled with the board. You'll notice RAM is missing from the list. I need a dual channel kit and would like to go with 16gb (4 x 4gb). What do you guys recommend? And noob question but found a 4x4gb kit for a great price, latency is 9 though and it is quad channel. What do you think? Will this work or be pointless?? Thanks a lot

I was able to get it for a good price and it offered everything i needed/wanted. I also liked the z68 chipset. Reason for the Geforce 210 was just to have a basic video source. I didnt want anything fancy or raise the cost of the build since it wont really be doing anything requiring great graphics. As a server, id mostly rdp into it and dont plan on having a monitor set up to it once its all complete.

RAM - it depends,... how many VMs are you planning to run on this machine ? If 2 or 3, then maybe 8GB would do,... If more, then get 16GB,...
As for the 4x 4GB, it would work fine on that board, also it would run in Dual-Channel only,... CAS 9 is fine,...

PSU - Get the Antec HCG 750W, they are in the same price range as the EA, but are better,...

Thank you, I didnt realize that about the graphics. However, this particular board doesnt seem to have any on board video outputs. I am planning on running around 4-5 VM's with Ubuntu Server as the host. I'll do my research on the power supply to see the difference, thanks for that recommendation. And I'll pick up the memory today. It the G Skill Ripjaw series DDR3 sdram 1600 in quad channel. But like you said it would run in dual. Thanks for the input!

^ Ohhh ya I missed that its the Deluxe board,... Have you purchased it ? For how much are you getting it for ? You should know that even ~$150 boards should be fine for your needs, also have video o/p thus eliminating the need for the 210,...

Thanks, yea I tend to go a little overboard. But I got the board for 220 and the ge210 after rebate would only run me $20 bucks.

Yep, those are the ones I was asking about being in quad channel. Great price and will pick those up today. Thanks a lot for all the help. Next up would be a nas box!
