New Build horribly under performing

Hey Guys

I ave just put together a new Gaming build which is grossly under performing and hoping someone can help me figure out where i went wrong. After speaking with a few friends they all seem to think my error lies with the choice of CPU but i wouldn't think the performance would be so bad, even if the CPU was not optimised for more recent games.

New Build

CPU : Ryzen 5 2600 3.4 GHZ
Mobo: ASUS ROG Strix B350-F
RAM : Corsair Vengeance LPX CMK16GX4M2A2400C16 16 gig DDR4 (2 x 8 Gig Sticks)
GPU : Gigabyte GTX 2080 OC 8 Gig (not a TI)
PSP : Corsair MR 650X Gold 650W
SSD : ADATA XPG SX8200 512GIG R3500 W3000

Playing a new title like BF5 with a friend who is running a GTX 1080 (not a TI), he appears to average around 20-30% more FPS than i do, same goes for COD MW3. We are both running 2560 x 1440 with everything on high. I average around 80-100FPS in BF5 and he will average 110-130

Sorry i dont have his full specs so not a great way to benchmark but as another example of low performance, my most recent Unigine Heaven Benchmark produces low scores such as

FPS:
87.3

Score:
2199

Min FPS:
9.0

Max FPS:
184.4

System

Platform:
Windows NT 6.2 (build 9200) 64bit

CPU model:
AMD Ryzen 5 2600 Six-Core Processor (3393MHz) x6

GPU model:
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 25.21.14.1722 (4095MB) x1 <----- just noticed the 4095MB, am i only using half my VRAM?

Settings

Render:
Direct3D11

Mode:
2560x1440 8xAA fullscreen

Preset
Custom

Quality
High

Tessellation:
Extreme

Any help is much appreciated,

Thanks!

Your benchmarks look like they are fine. Not sure why the SSD bench did not complete, but I doubt that is the problem. It looks like your RAM is installed properly according to the benchmark.

Below is a link to BF5 performance review. With a 8700k/2080 the average was 111 at 1440p. Your performance is not that far behind. The 2600 will get about 10% fewer fps than the 8700k and you are also losing performance with the slower speed RAM. Those two pieces right there is making up the 20fps difference from what you are getting to what techpowerup got. I think your system is performing about as it should.

Make sure your memory is in slots A2,B2, this is the recommended setup for dual channel with that board. Update the BIOS and then enable DOCP in the BIOS, this will make sure the memory is running at the correct speed.

feelingfroggy777 is correct though, faster memory would make a big difference for gaming. I had issues with mine (same CPU/Strix B450 MB) and eventually figured it out but going from 2133 to 3200mhz made almost a 20 FPS difference.

Thanks for the response, yes can confirm using slots A2 & B2 but didnt realise the ram was low par.

You suggest upgrading could make a difference of around 20FPS but with this GPU and CPU combo I thought it would still be a LOT higher or am I possibly expecting too much from this rig?

I was kind of under the impression that BF5 was more CPU bound than GPU bound, but don't hold me to that.

What CPU is your friend using?

That said...

Dang! I knew Ryzen liked faster memory, but I never realized it could have THAT big of an impact!

Not sure if they will let me renew the ram, but just to give myself an idea, should i be looking a module similar to this link?

Go 2x8gb over 1x16gb, dual channel gives better performance. I'm using Ripjaws @3200 and they work well.

Whoops, the 1 gig stick was an oversight, will certainly go for the 2 x 8 GIG, thanks again.
