This set up will be used for moderate gaming and more for productivity and web surfing. I tend to have tons of apps open at once so my research pointed me towards the quad core processor. I also chose the mobo for future upgrade opp to am3 if necessary. Any and all suggestions are welcome, thanks!

You gone matched up DDR2 ram with a DDR3 motherboard.

Get this or a similar set instead: 4gb G.Skill DDR3-1333

Otherwise, looks like an excellent build, make sure to grab a 64 bit os.
Edit, looks like there is a combo deal for $40 off for Vista Home Premium 64bit + the Phenom II X4 940.

A 1gb Radeon 4870 would of course give better performance for about $50 more, but thats your call.

Ditch the StealthXStream, OCZ's ModXStream or GameXStream series are much better suited for gaming rigs.

Totally agree with irkjab about the 4870.

You have just matched up an AM2+ processor with DDR3 which will NOT work .

The OP's solution was to stick with the 940 be , the same RAM and change the motherboard to an AM2+ board supporting DDR2

PS Newegg have 940be/mb combo's at better prices .

My bad, missed the AM2+ processor.

Why not keep the AM3 motherboard and go with an AM3 processor instead though? That way you keep the ability to upgrade

I presume the OP wants a quad , and you can put AM3 cpu's into AM2+ boards so there is some upgrade path

but like you I would choose a 720 be , the original mb and DDR3 ram
