Not actually a greenhorn when it comes to piecing together components for a computer, but this may actually be the first one that I actually assemble (my "builder" has moved & i don't wnat to travel 14 hours to take the components to him)

Important things to note: I'm really OCD & when I begin choosing components, I can literally spend days doing research on something as simply as a DVD drive; Also, I tend to "overbuild" everything. So far overbuilding has kept my current unit still pretty much up to date, even after about 5 years.

my current system is still running about 7.7 on the WEI if you remove the stupid 5.9 for the disk data transfer rate score (i7-920, 24Gb Corsair vengence, Asus mb, coolermaster haf full tower, dual lg dvd drives with lightscribe, usb 3.0, sata 6)

As I just started funding the project, it may be a bit before I get all the items: what I do have so far:
i7-4930K
Thermaltake Urban S31 Sno mid tower (will also be adding (2) Corsair air series AF120 Performance fans for increased cooling)
Akasa AK-ICR-14 Card reader

My plans include the following additional items (this is where your opinions & suggestions are greatly encouraged & welcomed 😀
(2) Mushkin Chronos Deluxe 240GB SSd MKNSSDCR240GB-DX (set up in raid-0)
GSkill F3-1866C8Q-32GTX RAM
Gigabyte GV-N660OC-2GD Video card
Asus P9X79 Deluxe MB
Corsair AX860i PSU
Corsair Hydro Series H110 CPU Cooler

I still haven't decided on a DVD (or perhaps BluRay) writer/drive (or 2)

Have I forgotten somehthing?
comments on compatibility?
Have I totally lost my mind for building such a system & NOT being a gamer?:pt1cable::lol:

FOr that type of stuff might look to a 4670K, Asus Z87 Hero or Pro (though the Z87-A will do fine, prob 16GB should be good also for that amount of photos if keeping numerous ones open, would think like the GSkill Snipers 1866/9 in 2x8GB, and would prob go at least a GTX 760, I like the Asus CU model, the SSDs are still good but would still want a platter type HD for backup and storage, also a 212 EVO is more than sufficient as a cooler
Looks pretty good overall, would add a regular HD (in particular with the SSDs in RAID 0, also the 660 is a good GPU , but what will the rig be used for, I ask because if gaming or doing work with video/images may want a better GPU (if budget permits)

If this is supposed to be a gaming build, you need to seriously reconsider your choice of graphics card. A GTX 660 is a midrange card and will be the weakest link in your system by far. For a gaming build, the only real reasons to go x79 is to take advantage of all the extra PCI-e lanes you get compared to SB/IVB/HW, and the fact that a well-overclocked hex-core i7 will be more suited to running them than a quad-core part. With a GTX 660, you can't even do that because you can only SLI up to two of them, so you'll never get far beyond single 780/Titan performance.

In short, either reconsider your choice of GPU and go high-end, or reconsider your base platform (x79 over z87).

not a gamer, just OCD about having high-end stuff: About the most intense thing I do is when I'm going through 4 to 5 thousand pictures in a weekend from the local nascar track: but then again, I'm not editing them, just sorting & then posting them on FB for all the rest of the fans

budget is somewhat up in the air: and if I could get comparable quality/performance at a better price, I'm all for that

thanks for all the help, pcpartpicker was a little help..ended up swapping out my RAM choices: didn't save me much over what I'm going to spend as I'm a cheapskate & I'll look for days for the best price on an item :heink:

that brings me to my last question (hopefully): is it possible or even adviseable to set up the 2 SSD's in Raid0 & then use the 10Krpm velociraptor (500gb) as a stand-alone for storage purposes, or should I either increase the 240gb SSD capacity or decrease the HDD capacity..or does it really matter
