New build- new CPUs in z87 board

Hi,
Planning on upgrading my core2duo to an i5. I'm familiar with last years i5 CPUs when I built a 4670k on a z87 board, but I don't see much z87 boards anymore over here in Manila. So will the newer CPUs work on the z97 boards flawlessly, as it's only an extension, not new architecture? What are advantages of the newer CPUs over the 4670/4770 of last year?

Users have had The i7 4790k and i5 4690k in Z87 motherboards. Most cases i would assume there would need to be a BIOS update . Most Z97 or h97 motherboards were released with Support for Haswell Refresh SKUs. The Z97 Chipset does have a few more options for a motherboard can implement . eg Sata Express, m.2Sata. Also there is some users that have put a new i7 4790k in their Z87 motherboard and the Default UEFI Settings could have fried the processor.

The old Haswell should work on new mobo with H97/Z97 chipset . Check from the Support list on line . The advantage of 4690 over 4670 is a little boost of the performance and better iGPU . But since you re getting a dedicated GPU , the last doesnt matter - iGPU . Yes , Z97 and H97 adds the support of "PCI-E ssd"

if you want to put Haswell Resfresh CPU on H87/Z87 mobo , you most probably will need a BIOS update or buy a mobo with the latest BIOS .

The advantages of the 4690K and 4790K over the 4670K/4770K is slightly better performance (negligible) and better temperatures (and of course overclocking). Yes the processors will work in the Z97 boards because they are socket 1150. If you are talking about the newest Intel CPUs (5820K, 5930K, 5960X), they won't work since they are only compatible with X99 boards (socket 2011-v3)

Thanks. But if they work well, why would it have 'fried' the CPU? So the z87 boards are not fully matched with the 4x9x series cpus then?

It varies. It is not 100% going to happen. Honestly other than a small part of a tech vid and some random posting I have not really read up on it.

Asrock Z97 Pro4 is good
Check CPU support list , to avoid need of BIOS update
