New Build PC Doesn't Restart. Help Please!! : UPDATED

Hi,

Just built my first PC (woohoo!)

Everything seems to work fine apart from it won't restart...

In windows if I click restart, I get the "windows is shutting down" screen, then my monitor turns off/ goes to sleep. The HDD's seem to stop but then nothing else happens, The fans stay on etc.

I have tried doing the same in safe mode and I get the same result.

I get the same problem if I boot to Bios and then select "save changes and reboot".

BUT!

If I boot to Bios. Select restore defaults the clcik save changes and reboot, IT ACTUALLY REBOOTS! but only once. If I wait for it to go into windows after it's restart and then click Start>Restart. I get the same problem as before. "


Any suggestions where I'm going wrong?



Update :

RIght, So I had the latest Bios Version installed. I've now tried going to the oldest (original) Bios version and I still get the same problem.

In Bios If I go into bios and dont touch anything but click "save changes & reboot" the computer WONT reboot.

If I first press "reset to defaults" then it prompts for "reset to default & reboot" it will reboot. But only once.







SPEC

OS : Windows 7 Ultimate X64

CPU : Intel Pentium G3240
MOBO : MSi H81M-E33
SSD : Adata 128GB
HDD 1 : WD 1TB Green
HDD 2 : Seagate 500GB

 
Just leave it on default settings then.

Actually, I had that identical problem on one of my builds and default BIOS settings were no good for what i needed.
So I tried a BIOS update and I was then able to change settings without it affecting restart. Job done!

Be careful with BIOS updating though. Read all the instructions carefully. It's a potentially risky process.

I should have been clearer.

Today I've built a very similar PC and I have just the same problem: The PC shut down properly, but if I try to restart, everything looks to shutdown (monitor, HDD, etc.), but the fans stay on, and the PC doesn't restart.

Here are my specs:
OS : Windows 7 Ultimate X64
CPU : Intel Pentium G3240
MOBO : MSi H81M-E33
SSD : Samsung 840 EVO 120GB

Anybody else with the same problem and/or any suggestion??

i just built 2 Computers with MSI Boards wich have the same problem.
One with an MSI H81M-P33 and G3240 Processor and one with an MSI H81M-P32 and an G3240 too.

If I try to reboot (Windows, Bios, ctrl-alt-del) it just wont work, Screens still black.
I tried to change memory, Powersupply, Disks and let everything uncabled but power and screen, no change.

Seems like MSI H81M has problems with G3240 Processors... i will have to get another Processor and try again.

Thank you for the information dt-service! Looks to be some kind of compatibility issue between these two components...

I just updated to the latest BIOS version (6.4 published on 2014/02/21) and I still have the same problem, so I'll keep investigating...
 
Hello,

after a phone call to MSI and an eMail to MSI Support I got the Answer:

its still the Bios, you have to flash the newest Bios (for H81M-P33 the V1.4) but WITH the ME firmware, after that reset to default settings.

For it worked for both Boards P33 and P32 with this solution, by flashing the bios i still forgot to flash ME too ;-)

Thank you so much dt-service! I'm really grateful, I was about to return the motherboard to the seller....

I also contacted MSI support, but they haven't solved my problem yet. Indeed, you were right, and it was the ME firmware: v9.0.10.1372 was installed, now I've installed the 9.0.30.1482 that comes with the 6.4 BIOS version (for H81M-E33), and everything is working fine!

Just in case anybody else has the same problem, to upgrade the ME firmware along with the BIOS I followed the instructions at section "Flash AMI UEFI BIOS by MFLASH" of this link: http://es.msi.com/page/biosupdate

I have a quick question about the motherboard u guys are using I was wondering if it came preinstalled with the latest bios I bought the same board from newegg and I bought a haswell refresh CPU with it and the CPU u guys are using are also haswell refresh so that leads me to believe your motherboards came with the latest bios

my Boards came with with a Bios that does not support the G3240, so i updated the Bios to the neweset version.
My fault was that i does not update the ME firmware on Both Boards.
After that it worked fine.

I bought the msi h81m e33 and I wanted to find out if they did any updates when they got there's so I know when I get everything which should be tomorrow now I don't have a normal haswell CPU to use so if this mobo doesn't come preinstalled with 6.4 then I will have to return the CPU I got which is Haswell refresh unless there is another way to update

Edit: I asked on the newegg page for this motherboard (h81m e33) and I asked if this motherboard supported Haswell refresh CPUs right out of the box and I was told that yes it would it's killing me that I have to wait till tomorrow to find out if it will work or not

Edit: also if they didn't have 6.4 already installed then how did the get their board to work with Haswell refresh CPUs sorry for all the questions
 
Without a working cpu you will not be able to update the bios, but also the unsupportet cpu´s will get you to bios menu and the you can update to the latest one.
An unsupportet cpu will not be apble to work at full speed or with all features, but native functions (like boot screen, bios entry or maybe OS install) will work.
Just update the Bios+ME to latest version with the socket 1150 matching cpu you have.
 
Thank you for the clarification I thought that an unsupported CPU would not work at all well that's good I see where the bios update is where is the me update or is that included in the bios update
 


I have the same issue except I have it on 13 computers! We bought 13 of these Mobo's etc to replace the old PC's in the school's ICT suite.

Can you explain exactly how you did it and where you downloaded the ME firmware please? This will help me massively and others that read the post!

I can't see ANY reference to ME firmware anywhere on the download page for this motherboard. I clicked the "windows 7" link about and got a 243MB file but this looks like a windows installer rather than a BIOS update!

Download the Bios from http://www.msi.com/support/mb/H81MP33.html#down-bios
and put the Content from the Zip on an USB-Flash Drive, put Flash Drive into PC with MSI H81M-P33 Board, in Bios go to M-Flash Point, then "Update Bios" - "Update Bios and ME"
Don´t turn of PC or take of the Flash-Drive from PC while Flashing.
PC reboots and will be ready with new Bios.
Just for fun, set Bios to default settings and reboot.

I got the same problem with my new build with Z87m Gaming and da Intel core i7 4790. Anyone knows if we have a bios update for this modo and if this will solve the reset problem?!
 
Don't change your CPU, i don't think it has anything to do with it, I have just built 2 PCs with the Mainboard MSI H81M-P33, with Intel Core I3-4150 @3.50GHz Processor, 16GB Ram, 1TB HDD and i am having the same problem
To add onto that, i also had to force shut down my PCs 3 times before it could complete OS installation
Anyone with a solution to this problem
 
Hi there,
Just built my PC too! A motherboard MSI H97M-G43 and a i5-4460 for the CPU.
When I turn off Windows 7, all the fans are always spinning.
I've flashed my bios to upgrade to the last version then cleared the CMOS, but problem is still there!
Is it the same problem that you have encountered? Anyone have clue to solve it?

Just wondering., which BIOS did your motherboard come preinstalled with ( Straight out of the box ) The newest BIOS? I also have the Haswell Refresh CPU and ordered this motherboard.

I'm not sure if I am posting this right because I have never done it but I had an issue with windows freezing after being idle for 10 minutes and I found out that it was a windows update issue. My computer came from Cyberpower PC and when I got the second one from there I had similar problems until I took out all of the windows updates and turned off windows update. Try it, I have been working with computers for over 25 years You could also have windows never go into stand by mode or turn off hard disks and monitors to try and isolate the problem. I never update the bios unless there is word from the manufacturer that is must be done.
 
I just put together a new motherboard MSI Z87-G41 pcmate and a new CPU Haswell I7 4790 and had the same exact problem when I installed Windows7 I had to restart the PC by holding the power button down for a few seconds then press power button again to complete the installation of windows. When it would try to restart the monitor would turn off but the fans in the case would stay spinning that's the when I'd have to hold the power button down to shut it down and repress to start up. Then I used the MSI live update program I found online that scanned my system for outdated drivers. And bios I installed the new bios it found and that fixed my restart issue. I hope this helps .
