New build; Possible HDD corruption

Greetings community! After years of using a dated rig I finally got around to upgrading. This is my second DIY build, this being the first one that was largely unassisted. Here is the upgrade kit I bought, and this is the old hdd that is going in as well.

Ok, so bare with me; assembly goes off without a hitch, all parts are secure and plugged in, wore an ESD wrist band the entire time, and hard drives were sitting on an anti-static bag away from the work bench. Upon first powering the machine, it prompts me with "you installed new hardware" and offers an array of options to perform a setup. I choose the option that pertains most to my situation which was just to start the setup process. BIOS menu comes up no problem, make sure the drives will boot in the right order, fans are running etc. Save & exit, Windows logo starts loading, it freezes, screen goes black, mobo beeps once, BSOD flashes on screen for a fraction of a second, some of the only bits I caught of the error description mentioned a hard drive and corruption, then a screen appears saying Windows failed to start and offers to run Startup Repair or start normally; the first time I run the repair app it offers to revert to a restore point, which I accept. Computer restarts, same problem, repair tells me it cannot fix the problem automatically. Double checked SATA connections, changed the boot order, even unplugged all other drives but the one with all of my stuff on, didn't fix it.

So here I am with a machine that doesn't work. Are there any tests I need to do to find the cause? Or am I to assume the worst that my drive has committed suicide? I really appreciate any help, thank you.

Did you change CPU? very often after doing a lot of hardware changes BSODs are common, and often a fresh install of Windows is required. Best thing would be to see if you can boot into Safe Mode and install drivers from there.
Yes, I upgraded to an i5 4690k; the only options it offers me now are to run Startup repair or start Windows normally. Is there a way to revert it so I have the safemode option? I've heard there are methods for resetting the firmware on the mobo though I don't know if that applicable to this scenario.

Hey there, SpaceKnight!

You can rule out or determine the possibility of the HDD causing the issue by testing it.
Check your hard drive manufacturer's website for a diagnostics utility, there are DOS versions that can run and test the drive without Windows. If your manufacturer doesn't have a DOS version of such a tool, you can use the WD's Data LifeGuard:

Another way to test the HDD is by plugging it on another computer. You can do that either internally (via SATA), or externally using a SATA-to-USB cable or a dock station. If the other computer lags as well, with your drive plugged in, then the damage is most likely internal and you should RMA the HDD and get a replacement.

Keep us posted though! :)

Whoo! It works! I did need a clean install; after that it worked perfectly. Thanks everyone for your advice, I learned some things going forward which is invaluable. I'm definitely keeping Tom's Hardware in my top sites for information. Thanks again!
