Sep 13, 2011
Hey everyone! Basically I just want you're guys input on this build before I buy it.. if it all attaches correctly, needs extra cables, looks good and solid, etc :) I've already gotten a lot of help on it, I just like making sure before I spend a large amount of $. I know tom's hardware is the best place for tech help around figured i'd ask here too !

yeah in a dorm room.. don't have too much space

same reason i'm going with a 20" monitor

That RAM is incorrect for these 1155 boards. You want 1.5v RAM as is what's recommended by the manufacturers. <----- try that combo

It took me a while but there's a huge improvement!

Ideal mATX case, that supports up to 210mm GPUs (which was one of my problems) without removing anything. Also great price!

Fractal Design Core 1000 Micro ATX Computer Case w/ 1 x 120mm fan

Modular PSU with enough power from Seasonic because you want maximum airflow in this small case.

SeaSonic M12II 620 Bronze 620W ATX12V V2.3 / EPS 12V V2.91 SLI Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply

The excellent combo suggested by Why_Me

Intel Core i5-2400 Sandy Bridge 3.1GHz (3.4GHz Turbo Boost) LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor BX80623I52400

bundled with:

CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CML8GX3M2A1600C9B

A serious Z68 motherboard and not a crappy H61/H67 one

ASUS P8Z68-M Pro LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS

And here's the big one! The smallest 560 I found! It will fit in a small Atx build and as It says it's 20% faster than 6870 in DX11 mode (I want to search a bit more for that though, still a great option)

Palit NE5X5600HD02F GeForce GTX 560 (Fermi) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card

The all time classic HDD

SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

And finally a serious Full HD monitor with IPS-Panel from LG. Comes with 3 year warranty.

LG IPS226V-PN Black 21.5" 8ms IPS Panel Full HD LED BackLight LCD Monitor 250 cd/m2 5,000,000:1

Until now SUM is 979$ without MIR. It would be great If you could add a small SSD for another 100$ and take full advantage of Z68 Smart Cache. It will still be OK without It but it's really worth

Intel 320 Series SSDSA2CT040G3B5 2.5" 40GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Swap out the SSD for the 20gb SLC made for caching, and you got it - also could go to 16 gb ram and have the swapfile put in a ramdrive.. otherwise right on the sweet spot for most of it..

Yup ... you got smoozed on that one. You might get 5fps more in Civ5 but otherwise the HD6870 is around $40 less and for the most part, flies higher.

And you should consider the Asus M5A88-M AM3+ 880G, and a PhII 955BE with the GSkill Ripjaws 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1866 for $298 (use code EMCKAJG39 for $20 off on the RAMs)

That saves yah $70 or so toward your SSD, video card upgrade, CPU cooler, etc. The OCZ Agility III 60GB SSD is around $70 AR and slobber knocks the drive you spec'ed.

I'm not real sure about your case. Is there a reason a standard mid-tower ATX will not work for you? Can't be more than an inch or so difference. Once you buy that case you are stuck with it -- I'm guessing you don't plan to live in that dorm room for the rest of your college education - LOL
