My computer has been restarting while I'm playing a game for a while. I justhink put in a new i7-4790k, Asus z97-A mobo. Gtx 970.

One time it did say that the cpu was running too hot so I reinstalled the heatsink and installed a temperature monitoring software. It has since then restarted while only hitting about 50c under load.

Solution

Okay try running only 1 set for RAM 8GB and make sure you put the ram in the correct lanes as i assume you have 4 RAM slots on your motherboard. Install the RAM like this

Make sure that your GPU is up to date driver wise. Also make sure that you are using enough thermal paste when applying the heat sink. I recommend if you have fresh thermal past to take the CPU cooler off, clean the heat sink and CPU from any thermal compound/paste and inspect the CPU socket on the motherboard and make sure there are no bent or out of place pins on the socket. Make sure there is NO thermal paste in the socket or under the CPU.

The reinstall everything and try again. Make sure your motherboards BIOS is up to date as well!

Hope this helps 😀

I've just reinstalled the gpu drivers as I had their new game ready driver. Not sure if that could've been the issue. Will try this as well as a bios update and report

Great, hopefully this fixes the issue if not it could be something to do with your PSU possibly not providing enough power to the graphics card or CPU something,

What PSU so you own and what wattage is it ? :)

No bent pins. No thermal paste in the cpu. Cleaned and reapplied thermal paste. Bios is up to date. Reinstalled geforce drivers. And sometimes the simplest answers are the right ones.

It seems the game ready driver that nvidia currently has available was the issue?

Yes just keep testing , sometimes the drivers can come corrupt for some unknown reason. Just keep testing but all should be well if there has been no random shut own or restart. I doubt the PSU would have been the problem as its a good brand and its plenty of power! Just keep testing.

Hopefully the problem has been fixed, it could have been the CPU slightly miss mounted in the socket.

Hope I helped :)

Idle temperatures are ~33c cores 36c package.
Under load ~49c cores 49c package.

Only seeing spikes of up to 59c. And it was stable at 49c when restart happened just now

Mmmm I honest have no idea now what it could be. You have checked the BIOS and it't up to date. You have check drivers. Did you uninstall them completely and then reinstall them ?

Those temps seem to be okay seen as it's an i7. I don't suppose you have an extra PSU that has enough wattage somewhere that you can use to test the system ?
How many sticks of RAM do you have installed and what is the configuration ? 2x4GB = 8GB ? 2x8GB = 16 ?
