New build sound issue

I just built a X2 555 using a m4a79xtd evo mobo, Win 7 64-bit. I have some odd sound issue tho, that i think is killing games.

BF2 starts fine, and does the intro in single player about 1944 and some failed invasion, then a guy starts talking but it is all garbled, and the screen is black. it eventually (1 min?) kicks back to the desktop.

Same scenario for Red Alert 3, except it is crackly the entire time, and may or may not even start into the skirmish.

COD4 plays fine.

I am using the Stereo Speakers as default, and there is no driver to update. All other sounds seem fine. Any ideas VERY welcome!

Thanks!

There may not be any newer drivers to install but, is the correct sound device selected for each game?

If the game options allow, attempt to use a standard sound-blaster device.

Also ... I do not know what chipset (realtek?) but, diagnostics may exist, either from the mfg support site, from the mobo mfg, or in the public domain.

It sounds like playback of media files works but synthesis is breaking down ...

whatever it is ... seems like only one "mode" is failing.

I would go into the game directories, using explorer, and find any files which are sound related (sort by type) ... click on them and see if they will playback. ...
... If you find the files that sound garbled, and note the file type, that might provide some insight.

Sound, to me, like those games are configured for the incorrect device, tho.

It *could* be a defective sound chip, but I give that possibility less than 1% probability.

The fact that it crashes your computer prolly means that the game is addressing a wrong device OR that the system bios features are not properly enabled.

... Please list your ENTIRE config ... right down to the case and PSU.

ALSO ... What exact sound output type is being employed? ... analog/digital ???

... what connector brings the sound out of your system, and by what path (intermediate devices) does the sound get processed and delivered to your speakers.

Are you using SPDF (coax/optical) or HDMI to get the sound out ???

Summary ... Find/run diags ... confirn games are configd for your chip .. post you entire system config ... models (links?) ... right here.

... Also run extensive diags on your RAM ... cold (at startup) and after warmup ... remove/rotate/reseat RAM modules (the logic is that some games may use more mem and problem only shows up "then/when".)

= c u soon =

Thanks, Alvin. I will start by posting what you asked for. I ran dxdiag and listed it below. I think it shows everything, but I will summarize my system in case all the dxdiag is overkill.

Another note is that the headphones do not work using the front audio jack. I have the speakers, which work for most things except the 2 mentioned games, plugged in the back of the machine.

Please keep in mind this is my first build, and quite a bit of what you asked for just flew way over my head. :)

CPU: X2 555, unlocked to X4 955(?)
MB: Asus M4A79XTD EVO
RAM: Kingston HyperX 1600 (only runs at 1333), 4GB
OS: Win 7 64-bit (is this an issue w/games?)
PSU: OCZ 550W Fatal1ty
GPU: Powercolor 4850 1gb
HDD: WD 500GB Blue
DVD: Asus 24x
Case: Antec Illusion 300

Please let me know if this didn't cover all you requested, and I will gladly get the info out here. Thanks so much for addressing this!

Does it matter that dxdiag says I have Direct X 11, but my card (a 4850) only does Direct X 10? Would that make the games die? (although I am still unsure of the static and garbled sounds).

Thanks!

You have your answer ! ... it is in that report ... er ... *somewhere*.

... That was just, plain mean.

After my last post, I went over to newegg, just to see what a "decent" cheapish PCI sound card costs ...

The SIIG is $24

My point? ... Half your gaming buddies prolly have a "not so old" sound card in their computer junk box, in the back of their closet.

My City (Austin) has a Goodwill Industries Computer Recycle Store ... I'll bet I could get an Audigy card for $5, there, because nobody buys them anymore (except musicians and freaks).

I'm just sayin' ... either as a swap/test/TS tool ... Or, as a permanent solution, the worst case is you are out ... what? ... realistically? ... $14 ?

= Al =

(just something cheap, if not free, that you can try, fairly easily. ... Creative's site will sense the card and auto-download the correct driver .. last time I checked).

Okay, that sounds like a good idea. I can take the card from my old computer just as a test.

I did update the drivers from asus' site, and it only made things worse. Some days you can't win for losing.

Thanks for the idea!

I tried that exact sound card, and I still have the same issue. All sounds are fine, except Red Alert 3 is static and within 1-15 minutes crashes to desktop.

BF2 does the same, but always crashes when the guy starts talking. The music is fine.

COD4 plays flawless.

Since the sound card make no difference, does this mean it must be the graphics card (ATI 4850)? I downloaded Catalyst 10.5 3-4 days ago but it made zero difference.

Not sure of the next step, but would love to try these games.

Gotta be some needed device driver selection in the audio control panel of windows or the games, themselves.

I just rechecked your hw config ... couldn't look better ... these games are trying to access some sound sw call that is not loaded and selected ... some ... where.

I would ask on the GAME FORUMS ... FOR THOSE TWO GAMES ... Don't give that whole long scary report ... just the symptoms with the various games ... see if that rings any bells, over there.

I think your hw is absolutely fine ... you may wish to get the latest "README" file, for those two games, as issues with newer OSs are usually listed there, along with common fixes and workarounds.

I would re-install the game(s) ... do an express install ... if that does not work then do the *CUSTOM INSTALL*, which may ask you to make some very specific choices regarding your audio hw.

... Upgrading the mobo bios, and mobo audio chipset drivers (you already did?) ... might also do it.

OTHER PLAYERS OF THOSE GAMES MAY KNOW !

Thanks for the responses, Alvin. I have uninstalled via Control Panel, and reinstalled, but haven't tried Custom. I'll add that to the list.

I have not updated bios... too scary. Not really sure how, and almost hate to as everything else if fine, but I may try it.

How do I update the mobo audio chipset drivers? I found it odd that when viewing the Properties of the audio/speakers, the "update drivers" button is greyed out, as is "roll back" (or whatever it says). DOes that indicate an issue?

Again, thanks for all your suggestions!

If I had more time, today, I would follow the newegg product link to your mobo site and poke around the support and downloads sections and I would also read all the bios update release notes (lists issues and fixes for a given rev) ... You are looking for the audio chipset drivers ... either from mobo maker or chipset support site.

Plese ! ... If YOU solve before "we" do ... report the final fix or workaround here !!

... I am now very curious to find out what the heck is up ... I would try other games, too ... one of them may issue an error report that might shed light.

= stay with it =

I have the latest VIA audo drivers, which is what my onboard sound says it uses. Is that what you mean by upgrading mobo audio chipset drivers?

(Yes, I certainly will post any solution back here. I have posted in two other forums on this site and am looking for a gaming forum here. You never know...)

Alvin Smith

yup ... that's what I meant.

I would have installed the games after the add-in "sound blaster" compatible card (and drivers) had been fully installed/selected/and tested with other games (with audio coming from that card, rather than VIA ... don't forget to ask around at the game site(S).

Took me more time to figure out how to find this thread than it did to solve my problem. :)

The problem was an unstable core that I had unlocked. Being new to this, I assumed that if I unlocked a core, and the system booted and ran, all was good. NOT! As I found the hard way, only in certain taxing situations will my core fail. Further, since it only killed the game and dumped me to the desktop, I never considered it was a bad core. Lesson learned.

Thanks for the suggestions, tho. There were all worth trying!
