My last build was about 8 years ago, so hoping someone has done a more recent build and can offer good suggestions. I typically go with intel and am not familiar with AMD. I want the raw power and dont mind spending extra for Intel. I'd like to keep it close to $1200 though. Hoping to reuse my ATX case/power supply and ROM drive and just gut the rest and put in the new board/memory/cpu/etc.

Main purpose is video editing, standard, business applications, I might play some destiny 2 on it, but this isnt something I have to have. I wont typically do much gaming, but want raw power for the video editing and conversion work and the photoshop editing that I do.

Thanks in advance, for any suggestions.

Solution
8-year old power supply likely needs replacing. Also need to know what case you have to determine CPU cooler clearance height.

There's really a lot you can do with $1200. 9th-gen Intel is the latest. The i9-9900K is the best mainstream CPU you can get, but you can't actually get it at least not right now because they are limited in stock and sold out. Then there is the i7-9700K is 8-core without Hyper-Threading while the i7-8700K is 6-core with Hyper-Threading.

I honestly don't know how much RAM you need. 16GB is typically enough unless you get in to editing 4K videos.

Here's yet another build suggestion with 9th-gen i7-9700K and faster RAM but a lesser GPU.

I purchased these as the solution minus the ssd. I have a standard 3.5" sata drive I'm using. I have a slight problem with the video card clearance because the hard drive bays do not allow for horizontal clearance and also a possible problem with heatsink clearance height. I can remove the case fan above the cpu and prob make that work, but I cant work around the video card clearance issue.

Was thinking they built parts based on standard ATX case but i now need to purchase a new case that will allow for clearance of the heatsink and the MSI video card along with 4 standard 3.5 " sata hard drives and 2 standard bluray/dvd+r drives. Can you make a few case recommendations please? Thanks.

Sorry about that. I should have considered your case and the parts before-hand. Cases come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. There are many to choose from including what is not shown here.

I'm pretty sure I double-checked and all of these cases have at least your required specifications below (based on your purchase of the NH-D15S and the MSI RX 580.) But do feel free to double-check the case before you buy it.

Max CPU cooler height: 160mm (Noctua NH-D15S)
Max GPU length: 270mm (MSI - Radeon RX 580 8 GB ARMOR MK2)
4x 3.5" internal drive bays
2x 5.25" external drive bays
