I started out wanting to build my son a decent rig. Once I hit $700 I decided to give him mine (in sig) and build a new one for myself. I have an extra 240GB SSD I bought on Black Friday. Shiny new 27" monitor as well (1920X1080). Will purchase keyboard/mouse separately so those don't need to be included. Planetside 2 is the most demanding game we play.

CPU: 4690K $199.99@ Microcenter
Mobo: ASRock Z97 Extreme 4 $104.99 Combo deal @ Microcenter
Cooler: CM 212 EVO $34.99 @ Newegg
Case: Antec GX500 $39.99 @ Newegg
Graphics: MSI R9 280 GAMING 3G 384-Bit GDDR5 $189.99 @ Newegg
Ram: G.SKILL Ares Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) $61.99 @ Newegg incl combo discount
ASUS 24X DVD Burner $19.99 @ Newegg
Microsoft Windows 8.1 - Full Version $119.99 @ Newegg
PSU: XFX TS Series P1550SXXB9 550W $65.75 @ Newegg

Total is $865.82

No hard budget, but under $900 is safe.

I'm a bit iffy on the the case. I've always used full towers, but was trying to save a little cash here. Open to suggestions. Worth the extra $20 to upgrade GPU to the new 285? Also taking suggestions on the PSU. Newegg is either out of stock or doesn't carry it. It's listed, but coming from another vendor. If there's something as good or better in that price range, I'm all ears. Newegg, TigerDirect, etc.

Are you overclocking?... if you are not, you could rather pick a h97 Motherboard and a non K CPU... maybe a 4460. You can upgrade the GPU to a better one with what you saved.

If you are overclocking, you may need to get a better more expensive cooler, like noctua nh d14 or d15.

Sorry, forgot to mention OC. I will OC, but nothing extreme. The 212 EVO is working great on my current build.

Don't need hard drive. Mentioned at the top. I have an extra SSD already, and another 500GB drive I use for storage.

You could do with something like this:

Interesting idea to go the non OC route. I always have, so its automatic to pick the K CPU. Upside is a better GPU... Downside is I don't get to OC and squeeze every drop from my CPU.

You could still get a 4690K (because H97 boards now have overclocking support). And not overclock it until you wish to. That's what I do with my system, only overclock it every now and then.

Think I'll stick with the 4690K. Combo deals at Microcenter make it too good to pass on even having to pay tax. Changed to the PSU Xavier linked, and changed to this Mobo. Only $45 with combo.

Would like to concentrate on the case and GPU. Worth $20 to go to the 285 over the 280? Any other card in that price range? For the case, any experience with the one I linked or the one Xavier linked? Whether I stick with the 212 or something else, want to make sure it will fit the case.

I don't know anything about that case. but it looks fine to me.

That motherboard will be good, but just to let you know that is a striped down Z97 motherboard. Because it's designed for the G3258, it is designed to be cheap so you can overclock the g3258.

This is exactly why I come here before I start spending money. Thanks for the tip. I'll have to do a bit more looking I guess. Thanks for the info so far.

So here's where I ended up. Not TOO far off base from where I started. Spent the extra for the 970, but glad I did. Thanks for the input. It's up and running as we speak. Fired up 1st boot and Windows installed without a hitch. No OC yet, but temps at 30 or below at idle.
