New build turns on but monitor won't show anything

Just finished a brand new build

CPU: i7 4790k
Motherboard: MSI G87-G41
Memory:G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1866 Memory
GPU: GTX 970 HOF
PSU: Cooler Master VSM 650W 80+gold
Case: Fractal design Define R4

Right now it powers up and all the fans turn on and my GPU lights up, but when I have it plugged into my monitor nothing shows up.

After some research I found out that the MSI Z87-G41 is incompatable with the i7-4790k without a BIOS update.

Is this likely the cause of this problem?

If so, can I boot from a USB drive to solve it?

Where would I find that? A friend gave it to me and all I have is the board and the cables it came with.

The board requires a BIOS update for supporting the CPU. You need a supported CPU for that.

I'm going to borrow my buddy's CPU for this (the same guy I got the board from). Where are the best instructions for how to accomplish this?

So I updated the bios to the latest version (version 1.8) and put my 4790k back in and i still get no video on the monitor. Should I try an older bios?

Final update:

New CPU works now!

I went back and updated to the v1.7 bios (listed next to the i7 4790k processor...) and I got that to work.
