New Build unexpectedly rebooting

Hello,

I'm attempting to stress test my new rig using prime95, however after around 5 mins in the computer reboots. Temps are idle around 28C, and hover around 68C on load. Temps remain consistent up until the computer reboots (no spiking).

Rig:

  • i7 4770k @ stock speed
    Asus Maximus VII Gene
    850W Gold XFX PSU
    OCZ 64gb ssd
    Swiftech H220 cooler
8GB ram 1600 @ stock timings - only part that isn't new. Pulled from an older system, works fine afaik
No graphics card installed yet (build isn't complete)
    Windows 8.1 64bit

Just trying to diagnose whether one of the components needs exchanging, or perhaps I've missed configuring something properly.

Check back if the new PSU solves the problem. That XFX PSU is one of the best. But any PSU can be faulty...
Have you run memtest on each stick of memory INDIVIDUALLY in the 1st DIMM slot? (The one the MB manual recommends for using a single stick).
http://www.memtest.org/

Is this occurring with anything OC'd? If not, if everything is at stock, I would suspect a faulty component... unless one of the RAM sticks shows errors.

Hello, thanks for the prompt response. I was leaning more towards a faulty psu as the ram has been functioning fine for a year in my other build, but I will test the ram slots individually. Everything is at stock, no OC yet. Will test tonight and update.

Ran one stick individually for one pass in memtest each, then ran them together in memtest over night for a total of 7 passes. No errors.

I think that rules out the ram/slots as a potential issue, I'm going to look into RMA'ing the power supply.

Amazing. First XFX I've seen that was defective. But it can happen to even the best of PSUs, I suppose. I was first going to mention that your symptoms were typical of a failing PSU sign. But I hesitated after seeing you had a high-end XFX 80 plus gold. That usually isn't a problem with those.

How did the store determine the PSU was faulty? Did it read low voltage?

Glad you have the issue solved.

They plugged it into a "Power Supply Tester", similar looking to this:

They mentioned the unit was not delivering a stable 'current' (or something to that effect). I guess the voltage output wasn't consistent, and would fail randomly under load. They were also surprised to see the XFX was defective, guess it doesn't happen that often.
