Hi all, first off just wanted to thank anyone who has read this and offers help! much appreciated!

So im looking at doing a major upgrade of our home pc - my former gaming and streaming build from 2012.... (yes its been awhile)..
Because its been so damn long, im back to complete newbie status with parts and components..

My budget is loosely around 2-3k AUD but im also hoping to salvage what i can from my old build - a few parts were upgraded over time like my CPU cooler and PSU.
Im no longer much of a gamer but do use the PC for a fair bit of charting and trading (home office) but my kids are coming into the gaming age and have been showing a lot of interest outside of their gaming consoles as well as needing a more family friendly PC for the household to share and fiture propf as much as possible for my budget.

Im also keen on getting a decent GPU for mining some crypto considering the PC runs 24/7 anyway (power costs are not an issue but noise is) - may as well build my positions for the next bullrun.

Old build as follows -

NZXT Phantom 410 Mid Tower Case
Intel i5-3570k 3.4GHz CPU
LiteOn optical drive
EVGA supernova 750 G2 80 plus gold PSU
DeepCool assassin ii CPU cooler
seagate 3tb HD (movie storage)
seagate 2tb HD (pictures and docs)
crucial M500 128gb SSD (games)
Sandisk extreme 240gb SSD (OS)
OCZ Vertex 4 128gb SSD (spare)
ASRock Z77-EXTREME4-M motherboard
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 660 OC 2GB GPU
G.Skill Ripjaws 8GB (2x4GB) RAM
asus ax-3000 pcie wifi adapter

I have bought a new case -
Fractal Design Define 7 White

and am assuming there will be nothing wrong with re using the old PSU, optical drive, SSDs, HDs and wifi adapter...
possibly the the cpu cooler?

But I've been so out of the loop, i need help and advice on this new build/massive upgrade.

as mentioned, loose budget 2-3k
AUS based so most likely buying parts from major stores like
Newegg aus
cpl online
centrecom
pc case gear
mwave
scorptec
kogan

ect.

Thanks for reading and thanks for the help!

First few thoughts off the top of my head:

I see several purposes (trading, mining, games, general productivity, movies, etc) and multiple family members interested in this. Any chance at all of having more than 1 PC in the household?

I see 3 SSDs as of now. I'd expect that could be consolidated. Drives that small (240 and under) aren't going far as storage only.

Do you know for sure if your current cooler will fit in the Fractal?

Any leanings toward AMD or Intel?

Most likely you'd want 16 GB of DDR4 RAM.

Do you have a back up strategy in place?

Any thoughts of overclocking? It's less advantageous on current processors, but maybe you have hobbyist inclinations.

I have no idea of Aussie prices, and will leave that to your judgement.

My wife has her custom built laptop as do I so no major need for more pcs (yet).
My wife doesnt really have any needs for the PC other than general web surfing and sometimes using Excel & powerpoint.

most of my work needs are also done through the laptop however I tent to do a lot of Charting for trading off my PC for the extra screen realestate as well as also using basic programs like Microsoft office ect which I tend to do through the pc rather than through my Linux laptop.

Movies.. don't really matter anymore, im going to wipe them all off - we pay for more than enough streaming services!

Crypto mining with a GPU or two is just an added bonus.
I already have a small asic farm in my garage but figure if im going to spend around 2-2.5k usd ugrading my PC, I may as well do some cheeky GPU mining on the side and perhaps help lessen the financial hit of the cards (s). Power isnt much of an issue for me.

Ive generally gone with INTEL in the past.

not sure re cpu cooler.

more than happy to consolidate SSDs

cpu, gpu, ram and motherboard definitely need to be upgraded

Standard Intel-centric advice for a mid/upper but not extreme level setup using current generation stuff would be:

12600K processor

B660 motherboard; Z690 if you have any thoughts of overclocking. Asus, Gigabyte, MSI.

An NVMe SSD for boot drive and applications, anywhere from 250 to 1 TB in size depending on your needs. Major brand...Samsung, Crucial, WD, etc

Additional SSDs as needed for storage, quite possibly 2.5 standard SATA variety. Avoiding spinning drives as much as possible. Crucial MX500 is a widely available good choice for SATA.

16 GB DDR4 RAM, 3200 speed; possibly 3600; possibly 32 GB if you have an unusual need.

Not sure what all of that adds up to from your sources.

I know next to nothing about video cards as I haven't used one in 10 years. What I do know is that they are hideously expensive lately, so expect that.

NVMe ssd?
do all newer mother boards have a slot for these?
Also i noticed a few 'gaming wifi motherboards' do these have wifi inbuilt?

there one of these for 4k?
or other resolutions?

I haven't examined "all newer", but yes, the majority do.

Maybe half have 2 ports.

Some have 3.

I know of at least one that has 4.

NVMe isn't drastically different in performance.

But using a M.2 2280 slot has the advantage of no cables.

I know nothing about wifi.
