New Build Video Card Issue

I just completed a re-build of my aging game pc with the following:

Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UDH3
i7-4790K
16 GB Corsair Dominator
Win7

I had to re-use for the time being my old video card:
Saphire Radeon Toxic HD 5850

I thought the system was locking up, but getting video was hit or miss, meaning, sometimes I would reboot and get the monitor to display, or sometimes not. In the middle of the BIOS the monitor would just go into sleep mode. It would take about 5 reboots to get the monitor to wake up. Once I realized it was some sort of video card issue, I swapped in a cheapo video card from another PC. It's working fine.

So I'm trying to figure out why doesn't the 5850 work? It was pulled working from my prior game PC. I supposed it could have just developed an issue, but seems unlikely. Or, could it be a compatibility issue with the UDH3 MB? Any other possibilities?

I don't want to spend 300-400 on a new video card only to have the same issue.

Any thoughts on how best to proceed? I'd really like to be able to use the 5850 for a few months.

Thanks.

The MB arrived with the latest BIOS. The new build continues to run great with the old crap video card.

I put the 5850 into the old PC to test it, and it's working fine, so doesn't look like any actual issue with the 5850. I'm starting to just not trust the Gigabyte UDH3 MB.

What is a good replacement MB if I dump the UDH3? Something in the $150 range.

Now wondering if this could be a power issue? The way screen just goes black, then monitor sleeps.

The 5850 and PSU were paired in my last build.

PSU is OCZ GameXStream OCZ700GXSSLI 700W ATX12V SLI CrossFire Active PFC Power Supply (heh, bought in 9/2006)

Seems like should be enough juice.

Thanks for the board recommendation.

Sorry, I didn't explain that very well. I have a complete 2nd PC that I pulled the crap video card from for testing, AND I also pulled the PSU from that same PC, smaller 600W unit. But, it didn't make any diff.

Out of curiosity, I moved the 5850 to the X8 PCIE slot in the new build, instead of the X16 where I have been trying to get it work. So far it's working great . . . and I'm not sure what that's telling me? Any thoughts?

Have you tried the guide (link) I given earlier?

How about the cpu fan? It could be the cpu temp goes high as motherboard needs to shutdown to protect cpu from overheating..
Or could be motherboard itself, your may try other parts on this board (if compatible) by bread boarding.. See if the still there.

When monitor in sleep mode, is you pc running? or totally off that makes monitor turn to sleep mode. Try also the other pc with your monitor..

Yep, I did check out that guide, and I checked what I thought was applicable, but it didn't turn up anything.

I've watched temps, they stay under 40c, the pc is still running when the monitor blanks out, for instance I would reboot, the monitor never wakes, but I can see the HD activity LED, and I hear the Windows greeting tone as Win7 starts up. And I have tried my monitor with the other pc, it works fine.

But the weird thing is that all the problems went away when I moved the 5850 video card to the PCIeX8 slot. That's what I'm trying to figure out, and understand why that makes a diff.

Thanks

It might be a bent pin issue then or a faulty slot. Either way, I would RMA the board.
If reseating the CPU, check the socket for bent pins.

- How about try another cable like HDMI or swap connections to other DVI port of your HD5850?

- If the card is removed from the board then connect monitor directly to motherboard graphics port.. is your system running without issues?
Is Bios graphics settings in auto (PCIE/igpu) - anyway it would be by default once your reset bios (but maybe)...

It could be motherboard pcie slot or it could be the graphics card..

Sorry for the late closure on this thread, I thought I had already posted the solution. Turns out the motherboard had a bent pin in the CPU socket. RMA'd that board, and problem gone. Then the replacement UDH3 had audio issues, returned that and got an ASRock, which has been perfect.
