New build, wrong psu and gfx card?

Hi chaps.

I had some trouble getting my new build to work, but its fixed now.

BUT

I think I have bought a psu to weak according to some people. Here is my system'

Asus Maximus hero vii
i7 4790k
Hyperx ddr3 1866 2x4gb
Super flower 650w gold PSU
Corsair h105
Raedon hd5850 (old)

I want to get a new single graphics card next month, but some people have told me that 650w psu isn't really enough for my current setup, do you think that is correct and if so what sort of wattage should I be looking for and any good makes/models recconmended?

As mentioned I want a new gpu and will be spending between £200 and £250, can anyone reconmend any cards for me has there are so many to choose from!
I have had both AMD and Nvidia cards in the past and don't mind which brand. Does the hero vii prefer one or the other?

theres no backplate on the msi gtx970 gaming

the gigabyte g1 has a backplate

Super Flower is a premium PSU manufacturer whose models rival that of Seasonic and sometimes may even surpass! 650W is technically enough for a GTX 900 series SLI so you shouldn't worry about it.

Definitely upgrade to a GTX 970 as above mentioned if its in your budget, but from PCPartPicker UK, it seems a bit above your budget. If that's the case in a month as well, then go for a R9 290 (£230): http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-video-card-r9290dc2oc4gd5

VII Hero will not have a preference. It's made by ASUS who makes both NVIDIA and AMD cards. The R9 290 I suggested is actually an ASUS video card and its black and red so it'd color coordinate pretty well with your board, if you're concerned with that kind of thing 😉

Your GPU at stock needs 500 or more watts and your processor at stock needs around ~88 watts. I think you're fine in terms of your PSU limit (and your PSU is gold rated, which shouldn't lack at handling ~650 watt usage).

If you're planning to get a new GPU I would advise you to take advantage of Black Friday which is happening in the next few days (if you live in the US, or if you have no problem ordering online).

Thanks guys, great advice there!

I did read alot of reviews and comparisons and the Super Flower was picked because during testing it handled high loads well apperently. Glad to know I wasn't a total fool lol!

TBH now I know the PSU should be OK I can prob stretch to the gtx 970, is there any make thats better than the others?

several companies have started doing black friday sales in the uk this year

best gtx970--my opinion

1st gigabyte g1--though its 30cm long

2nd msi gtx970 gaming--got mine for £267 including postage and a free game code that got me £35 of the cost back by ebaying it

3rd asus strix

i would recommend the msi gtx gaming gtx970---great card--fans dont spin till 60c and closest to your budget

yes it will i had a coolermaster storm trooper before i changed to a enthoo primo

the stryker is basically the same as the trooper far as i remember

Hi mate, after all the great replies on here I am going to buy the MSI GTX 970 :)
It might be after xmas, but it will be next month, looking forward to it already!

great choice--the gtx970 is one of the best price/performance at launch graphics cards i can remember

and in a month it may even come down a little

The MSI GTX 970 will come with a blackplate preinstalled and come at higher factory clock speeds than the ASUS Strix and EVGA ACX 2.0, so you'll get a couple more FPS.

If you ever need to check something in the future, you can go to PCPartPicker and find your case: they will show you your case's video card clearance with hard drive cages and the maximum video card length clearance with the hard drive cages removed.
For your specific case it lists:

Maximum Video Card Length 12.68"

You can find the length of the different GPUs online, which are usually in mm. Just use a simple Inches to Millimeters converter and you'll know if the card will fit 😉

Oh wow. This whole time I thought MSI provided backplates. I knew the ASUS Strix provided a backplate, EVGA and Gigabyte Windforce did not. Guess I'll have to add MSI to the "no backplate list" and Gigabyte G1 to the "yes backplate list".

yeah its a case of buying a backplate for the msi if wanting one--about £20---£25

so far only ek are doing one as its a non reference pcb

theyre also the only ones i have seen doing a waterblock for it
