CPU : i5-6400
GPU : GTX 1060 6g
Ram : 16g Corsair 2666
Mobo : ASUS Z170 Pro Gaming

So, my son dropped orange juice in my old computer so i replaced everything with what you see above. My old build consisted of an i7-6700, GTX 960 with the same ram and a stock Mobo that came with the computer (ibuypower).

Now, the new build is just so damn slow and i have no idea why...Start up times take forever, launching chrome seems like it takes an eternity and even shut down seems to take forever. I downloaded 1 game to see how it performed and it was terrible i had to set everything on low and still have moments of freezing at 0 FPS to skipping around at 150 FPS. While on my old setup i was running medium settings at 150 FPS smoothly. I honestly feel like i am using a $400 laptop.

Could it be the CPU the guy at the service desk recommended? If so ill just return it and get a i5-6600 or just bite the bullet and get another i7-6700. I just want to make sure before i do that it could possibly be the i5-6400.

Thank you!
Corey

The service desk reinstalled but with the keep files option selected.

Its not the CPU if even opening chrome has an issue. The i5-6400 is lower end but it will blaze thought browser / office work just fine(I built a mini itx rig using the i5-6400).

Have you tried watching the task manager (control + shift + esc) to see if any particular thing sticks out from CPU or memory usage?

I have read that about the 6400's being good with normal applications which is why i found it so odd. I actually did open up task manger while my game was running and it was putting my CPU at 100%.

Seeing you've used the 6400 on your own rig should i just swap it out now while i can for a 6600?

Also, ive never gone through a new motherboard install. So when windows reinstalls do i need to do the BIOS update on my own or does the install disc with the motherboard take care of it?

I used the 6400 in a mini itx build that I did for a family member to be used for web browsing and MS Office work. For gaming I would go with something with stronger single threaded performance like the 6600K if it were me. However your issue you are having right now will likely be there even if you swap the 6400 out for a faster CPU.

What OS are you using, Windows 10?

Do watch the task manager / resource monitor as it should help pinpoint what is using CPU / memory.

I think i will get it swapped out today, they put it in without asking me first and just said they got me a deal on one that will work fine for gaming so it was kind of annoying when i showed interest in a 6600.

I am using windows 10, i used it on my old build also.

I only checked for a moment to see what was destroying my CPU in game didnt look to in depth at anything else to be honest.

Question though, when we reinstalled windows we did it with the save files option. Could it also be that my HDD is still olding old drivers from my previous build causing these issues?

Windows 10 is pretty good about snagging the correct drivers. Did you get the latest drivers from Nvidia and on the install tell it to do a clean install(just a check box you select on the custom install of the Nvidia driver)?

You may also take a peek into the device manager and see if you find any devices that show up as no driver, etc.
