Hi everyone,
I've been looking at cases for a while now and basically debating between the two mentioned above. I am planning to build a computer with an Ivy Bridge CPU (not sure if I'm going for i5 or i7, but definitely the unlocked version) and a GTX680, with the option to go SLI later if need be. I intend to overclock, but with air cooling only - planning to get a Noctua NH-D14 CPU cooler.
Basically I want a cool and quiet case. According to most reviews neither of the two run very cool, but my plan was to add a side fan (or two in the case of 550D) to get better cooling performance, as according to http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2012/02/10/the-big-cooling-investigation/1 the best place to put extra fans is on the side.
I was wondering if anyone had any input on this decision, apart from waiting for a review that compares the two. According to Hexus ( http://hexus.net/tech/reviews/chassis/36473-corsair-obsidian-series-550d/?page=6 ), the 550D is the quietest case they have ever tested, but the r3 has not been tested.
I'm aware the r3 is significantly cheaper, particularly as it includes fan control, which I would really like to have, but there are things I quite like about the corsair (the extra side fan spot, magnetic dust collectors, even better ease of mounting).
Please also feel free to suggest other cases that might be better suited.
Thanks for your help.
