Hi

New build with cat6 wired to six locations. Other ends plugged into BT gigabit 8 port switch connected to BT hub 3. Wireless fine, laptop connected to router or switch directly works fine. Laptop foes not work connected at any of the 6 locations - it either doesn't connect at all (no lights) or gets stuck alternating between network cable unplugged and acquiring network address. I have used a network tester to test the cables and the all light 1 to 8 in sequence.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

TIA

Kris

Unfortunately the cheap cable testers only check basic connectivity.

The most common problem that causes this is that the pairs are not properly matched for example a pair would be orange and orange/white. If you were to cable pin1 with green and pin 2 with orange/white on both ends it would test properly pin 1--pin 1 and pin 2 -- pin 2 but not work. The most common error is on the pairs on pin 3,6 and 4,5 it is very common to have the wires cabled with pin 3,4 and 5,6 set as pairs instead.

Be very sure that the ends are terminated correctly.

Hard to say with multiple cable it is not likely a distance or cable damage issue. Things like TDR cable testers can find those issues but I don't think that is it.
