Hey everyone! Thanks for your help in advance.
I am the founder of a new company that develops software. We are all working from home. I have the server at my house, and I need to share the server to all my employees so they can access the files and put new ones on. I thought that the best way to do this would be to create a VPN server, while we don't have any funds to rent one. I followed the tutorial here: http://
and I got to the part about connecting. I have a Netgear R7900 router and I am pretty sure I forwarded the ports correctly.

When I go over to another network I connect using the IP address I found by Googling what is my IP address? and using the username and password that I defined during the setup of the server. If gives me this error:

I have no idea what to do anymore. Am I doing something wrong? Am I interpreting this technology wrong? Here is my config on the client computer:

The scribbled out number is the IP address that I Googled. One weird thing is when I type that number into the web browser at my house it brings up the router configuration page, but nothing on another network. Any ideas? All suggestions are appreciated! Thanks!

Also, I don't know if the images actually work, they don't show up in the preview, so if not they are all here: http://

Solution
That is strange vpn is not platform dependent. Most router implementation run openvpn now days. I though there were clients for all OS. The other standard is IPSEC that runs on everything but not all VPN servers on routers have support.

The only one I know that tends to be OS dependent is PPTP which is mostly used by microsoft. This I am not sure of because this form of vpn is considered insecure so I have not bother to look at it in many years

First of all i suggest to use a linux machine for VPN usage, but if you want to use windows you need to check the follow:
Ports:
1723 TCP
1701 UDP
must be open.
Firewall:
You need to allow routing in it Firewall/Allowed Apps
Router:
Check if VPN passthrough is allow
You need to exclude the IP of VPN from DHCP
Hope this can help.

I am pretty sure that router supports vpn server but they have so many models I can't be sure.

It tends to be easier to get vpn to run on the router itself because you do not worry about port forwarding and such. The downside is if you run a lot of users the router does not have a lot of cpu power.

While I would love to do this, my router does not support Linux or Mac operating systems on the VPN. Thanks for the idea, though.

Solution
1. Create Microsoft OneDrive account for company, and connect your shared computer with that account. Sync the folder online.
2. Check this guide and share the link with your employees. They can now map your shared drive as a drive letter.
3. Done. Just make some procedure so that your employees do not step over each other feet.

I looked into it more, and I was mistaken. There is a way to do it on Linux. Thank you so much for helping our company lift off the ground!
