I've just upgraded a few parts and decided I might as well get rid of my old run down case, essentially making it a whole new build. I kept my same drives of course and hadn't realized the LGA1151 socket was unique for heatsinks... I tried running the I5-6600k on my AsRock fatal1ty K6 gaming mobo without a heatsink. The computer has been shutting down every time I start ramping up and opening programs and what not so I'm assuming it's a safeguard for overheating CPU. For now I'm just waiting for my heatsink to arrive!
If that's not it then I'm clueless... any other possible issues?

You mean that you didn't use any heatsink with your cpu? You are lucky that intel has working thermal safeguards in place. That was a stupendous mistake that if you have watched any guide (from the thousands) you would know that it is a big no no. I just hope that your mobo and cpu are still fine.
