New computer- graphics / sound freezes.

My new system is:
ASUS A6N32-SLI, AMD 64x2 4500+, Corsair TWINX 3500LL 2x 512B (1GB total), nVidia 6800GT, XP Home SP2.

I play flight simulator, and this issue occurs whenever graphics get intense. First the video freezes, as does the mouse, then after 10 seconds of this the sound freezes, then after a fraction of a second it repeats. Occurs quite predictably with intense graphics. My G15 keyboard actually shows both CPU cores at 0% for some of this cycle, usually at about the time where the sound also disappears.

My power supply is 300 watts, and I'm thinking of upgrading as I suspect I can't be far from it's margin. I also inted to try mem-test, and have some other sticks here that I could try. I have re-installed drivers several times (chipset and video), and have the dual-core hotfix and drivers installed.

Is there an application that I could use to test my SATA HDs? Any other ideas from anyone here would be most appreciated.

Thanks- Bruce.

Considering your PSU is only 300W that would exsplain the problem. As you get into the heavy graphics it's pushing the video card really hard. It's also causing the CPU to ramp up a bit. It sounds like at that point the system is trying to pull more amps then the PSU can provide.

Looking at your system it needs about 17A under heavy gaming conditions like you are reaching in your game. How many amps does your PSU supply on the +12v rail?

nope ..the psu ..is fine ..i say you better try that memtest..and see if you have any memory errors.....
if the psu is defective or not enough for the sistem it will crush immediatly...sistem will restart...

ohhhhh....i see you have 6800gt ...yaappp..that`s it ...you have a problem in here....
the psu is enough...your problem is the card ...those cards ..had a lot of issues regarding original drivers....
try another detonator (forceware..sorry)...an older or newer version..and see what happens...

also ..keep an eye on the temperature of the board.....the cooler could have been moved samehow and it won`t cool down enough the card....
you could use riva tuner to monitor the temperature of the board in games .... if your gpu supports hardware monitoring and i think it does...

so the problem resumes to the mem errors or video card problems....could even bee a defective card (do you have artefacts ?) ..but first you have to check everything

good ..luck

Thanks everyone for your replies.

I will do the memtest, easiest to do.

On the video card, the 6600GT is running the 91.47 drivers, and also had this problem with earlier drivers as well. I have never loaded the original drivers that came with the card, and always use Driver Cleaner to clear remnants of previous drivers. If I get further on this issue with no resolution I may try replacing the card and see what happens.

Other than replacing the PSU, is there any way to know if it's on it's margin? I will pull off the covers tonight and note the amperage available.

Thanks again everyone, any additional ideas most welcome too :)

What other effects would I be noticing if the CPU was overheating? The fact that the issue appears to occur some time into the game makes me wonder if something is heating up too much. I have plenty of air movong through the case, and have not overclocked. How would I determine if the CPU was getting too hot? (never had that problem before so not sure of where to start).

Bruce.

Do you have a 6800GT or a 6600GT? There's a big difference. PSU could be an issue if it's a 6800GT, but usually the system will just reboot if the PSU is the problem. Are you sure it's not an issue with the game that a patch hasn't taken care of? How many processes are running in the background on your system. You could have a malware issue.

BTW, I've never heard of an ASUS A6N32-SLI. I think you meant an ASUS A8N32-SLI

Hi Anoobis,

I must have been tired last night :), teach me to pull an all nighter the night before, then get sucked into looking for a fix to my PC.

The video card is actually a 7600GT
LEADTEK WINFAST PX7600 GT GEFORCE 7600GT 256MB 128-BIT GDDR3 PCI EXPRESS X16 VIDEO CARD

And yes you are correct- an A8N32-SLI motherboard.

Sorry about the incorrect info. Bruce.
