new computer old monitor won't turn on

Bought new computer hooked it up to an old monitor and the monitor won't turn on. The instructions were simple. Help!

What components? Is the CPU fan spinning when starting the PC? What video port (and adapter) using for connecting the monitor?

Computer is a new HP , fan is spinning on the computer, came with a monitor adapter, all seemed to fit perfectly. Monitor is a cheap emachine , big old thing.

What HP model? The video port can be HDMI, DVI-D or DVI-I (I assume it doesn't have a VGA one).

It is HP Pavilion Slimeline 400-034 PC with DVI port, it came with an adapter.

It has a DVI-D (3 in the picture) and a DVI-I (4) port.

If using DVI to VGA adapter, connect it to the DVI-I port (4).

I am using the DVI to VGA adapter and it is plugged into the DVI-I port (4) . The adapter wouldn't fit the other one. Still not working.

I know it's possible the emachines monitor may be used up, trying to trouble shoot, It worked the last time I had the old emachine plugged into it.
The old emachines kept shutting itself off, maybe that damaged the monitor. I'm just trying to avoid a new monitor if I can.

Yes, I doubt it's the PC, so most probably the monitor or the cable.

Some TVs have DVI or HDMi ports. You can try using a DVI to HDMI cable.

Took monitor to Best Buy, tested, worked fine. Apparently not compatible with the specs of the new computer. Bought flat, screen works perfect.
