new cooler and 50 degrees at idol desktop [need advice/help].

I just got the XIGMATEK Dark Knight II SD1283 Night Hawk Edition cooler for my CPU. I've had the stock cooler until I got this one. I overclocked to 4.3 Ghz and put it in my rig yesterday and there was a major improvement in the temperatures. Although today, I turned on my computer and my CPU temps are at around 50 degrees while I'm idling at the desktop with absolutely nothing running accept for my temp monitoring program. I've have spent all day trying to figure out what the problem is but i need help.

I downclocked back to the factory 3.8 ghz and i'm still getting pretty much the same temps. 🙁

one that you paste is not done well or the cooler is not fix the way it should on the cpu also check the way you cpu fan settings are set .

I think i may have put too much thermal paste. i knew i would make that mistake. I can't re-do it either because i'm out of thermal paste.

Looks like you need to get more paste and re-set that cooler good and tight. Just a small amount the size of BB will do.

we all make a first mistake on building just clean up and whe you have new paste apply and retest .

Im re-doing the cooler now. Turns out I had more paste in the tube. I put a small dot in the middle. Less than last time. Hopefully this time it will be better.

YES. It worked. Im back down to around 10 degrees at desktop. Thanks for all the help.
I don't know what i would do without Tom's Hardware.

Wait, it went back up to 50 degrees. I'm so confused. I dont know what happened. it was running cool for one minute, now its really hot again.

I found a weird problem. I have 2 temperature monitoring programs. Core Temp (http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/), and CPUID hardware monitor (http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html) When i start up my computer and run core temp, it shows my temps are around 5-15 in my cpu. Then if i launch cpuid hardware monitor, my temps go up to 50 degrees on both programs. If i quit cpuid, my temps stay at 50 untill i restart my computer. I don't know if this is a software problem or what.

what is the fan speed reading in hwmonitor,also try this and report reading back http://www.hwinfo.com/ there is must be something the way you cooler is fix to the motherboard .

What is ambient (room) temperature?
For a 15°C idle temp it must be freezing cold.

The room i have my computer in is pretty warm so 15 degrees cant be right.

The box my cooler came in says the max rpm of the fan is 2200rpm and the fans is only running at 1500 at 50 degrees.

the tmpin are ok but the package read 60c and this fan should be pwn and not showing in the report you should the company label from the front for the fan and you could also had another fan to this cooler what hw info give you and the name of the other components in the case with name and model and how many fan you have in the case ?

I just got some new thermal compound and applied it. But I am getting basically the same temps, ACtually a little less. But pretty much the same.

I noticed though that while i'm playing games at max load, my temperatures still stay in the 50c range. Is this a good thing?

Hmmm...
You might have enabled something in the BIOS thats forcing a constant frequency. Did you disable any power saving settings, or something like TurboBoost or SpeedStep in the BIOS?
Use a program like CoreTemp to monitor your processor frequency at idle and then under load (Prime95 or something). If it doesn't move, then I think your temp issues are the result of the CPU constantly running full ball, and not dynamically changing its speed based on load.

also if you use a asus board did you activate the cool n'quiet features that could be it .
