I'm wondering if i'm suppose to do something after installing a new motherboard and CPU (Haven't done anything in the bios). I went from an i5 7500 to a i7 8700 and my new motherboard is the Gigabyte B360 HD3. Im also using a GTX 1060 GB. I go to my system configurations and it says i have a max of 4 processors, but my new CPU has 6 cores and 12 threads. Also my gaming performance hasn't changed. Am i suppose to do something in the bios? i haven't touched that yet.

So Is this what is affecting my performance? It’s only using 4 cores of the 6 it has?

A motherboard change is one instance where I'd do a Windows clean install.

Then check which bios version you have now. You might not need to update the bios just to get the computer running. I personally would prefer to get the computer running normally first, then update the bios.

I think I fixed it. Will changing the number of processor from 4 to 12 increase my gaming performance? I did that in system configuration>boot>advanced< and change number of processors.

Check it with cpu-z to see if it has 6 cores 12 logical after that msconfig change. The I7 core should be able to run around 4.3 GHz all 6 cores or 4.6 for a single core which is better than the I5 at 3.4 and 3.8 almost a gig faster and two more cores. You might be throttling if using an OEM cooler, may want a coolermaster 212 or cryorig h7

Clean install is best, but I have swapped out a burned out 2500k/z77 with a 7350k/z170 (got the combo for $149 at microcenter no way the CPU was worth MSRP alone) without a reinstall and other than activation troubleshooter not having anything linked to my MS account, I entered the key and all was well. I think it is easier to upgrade on the same brand rather than cross brands.

The motherboard is the same brand as my old one. I turned turbo boost on and in task manager it says it running above 4.0ghz with a cryorig h7. But I still have no gaming performance increase. What do you mean by cpu-z?

I meant intel to intel over intel to AMD. Not about a specific motherboard maker.

https://www.cpuid.com/

CPU-Z shows info about your cpu to check if you have 6/12 and not 4/4 cores/threads of the old cpu like the 2 to 4 core upgrade I did was stuck on 2.

You may have been GPU limited and not CPU limited, did you use FRAPS to see the frames per second of old setup vs new?

So if it is stuck at 4/4 and not 6/12 how do I fix that?
