I put an Intel i3 330M in my HP Pavillion G6 to replace the Pentium 6200 and Im getting a black screen. Back light turns on, but is black. No bent pins that I see. Does anyone know what could be causing this? Ive pulled the BIOS battery end re-inserted it, still the same thing.
Any help is appreciated.

The i3-390m uses system memory just like all processors do. It has a small amount of cache memory on-board, tho...
Level 1 cache size: 2 x 32 KB instruction caches and 2 x 32 KB data caches
Level 2 cache size: 2 x 256 KB
Level 3 cache size: Shared 3 MB

It's built-in iGPU also uses system memory for its VRAM, if that's what you mean.

Does the laptop work properly with the Pentium chip installed?

Is your motherboard updated to the latest firmware? Does the motherboard support the CPU that you are trying to install? Just because it is pin compatible does not mean it is supported.

The board should support up to an i3-390M

Like suggested above, verify that the laptop still functions with the pentium. Ruling out that you inadvertently did something while removing/installing the first round. After doing so, double check your bios revision in relation to the newest non beta version. Without having to do some research it might eliminate the issue of incompatibility with a new chip.

Hey, thanks all. I have the Pentium put back in right now, it's working perfect. I guess that means the next step is to update the bios? Weird. The CPUs both came out at the same time period, you'd think it'd support the i3.

The Pentium may only require an older BIOS version due to its older design, even though it is from the same release date as the i3.

Have you tried following the instructions on page 89 of your owner's manual to see if it will find the correct BIOS online automatically?
If the above is a wash-out, see if this is your laptop: http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/HP-Pavilion-g6-Notebook-PC-series/5048672/model/5078477
Check the model number closely.

Mine is the same but I slight variation, I believe ending in ca instead. I already have the seemingly latest bios installed according to that website. Maybe just a bad CPU? My computer should be able to handle it, so I do t understand why it wouldn't turn on when it will with the old one unless the new one is broken.

If you bought it used and it was not properly protected from ESD damage during shipping by the seller, that is a very real possibility.

I bought it refurbished from Newegg. It was shipped wrapped in foam paper. But from what I'm seeing in manuals and whatnot, it may only support the 380m and 390m past the 6200& 6300 Pentium, so I'm going to see if I can return this 330m and get the 390m that it actually states is compatible in the manual.
