New CPU Cooler... Now No Display or Startup

Hello All,
I’m a long time lurker on this site and I want to appreciate everyone input. It has been very valuable over the years.

My current situation with my rig.
System Specs:
MB: Giga z77-ud5h
CPU- i5 3570k
GPU: MSI R9 290x Lightning
RAM: 8G
PSU: 630 Roswell
Windows 7

So I decided to finally overclock my CPU. I happen to pick up the Cooler Master EVO. I install and get into Bios changed my setting go to start windows and nothing happens. No beep…no nothing. So I decided to pull my video card and run just the onboard, and it works fine. I then put the GPU back in and nothing no beep and can’t even get into bios. I have done this several times already.

I happen to have a spare build here and tested the R9 on that PC and the GPU works fine. I also tried the GPU from the spare and it worked in the PCI slot on my MB. I’m thinking that my 630 PSU went bad. I only have a 500w on the spare and it works. Any thoughts?

Did you take the cpu out to reapply thermal paste when you took your other cooler off to put on the cooler master evo?

And if I'm understanding correctly, your computer turns on and allows you to go into bios? What happens after that, just won't boot windows?

Make sure its selecting the right boot device to boot into Windows, every time I take my processor out it defaults to my storage hdd which doesn't have windows installed so I have to switch it back to boot from my ssd.

Hi and Thanks for the reply,

I did take off the old thermal paste and reapplied. I also took off the cooler to make sure I did not use too much.

My computer will only turn on when I use the on-board display or the other GPU from the back up PC. When I put the R9in my it will not even go to bios. It just leaves me at a black screen with no beep indicator.

In response to your message I'm using my computer now with my GPU out and using the on-board display.

I did not take the CPU out.

I'm just curious why I can boot up with no gpu in and use on board display.

My gpu works in the spare computer so I know is not defective.

That r9 takes some juice. I'm leaning towards PSU is dying. According to the calculator my system is using 807w.

I also would like to say that when I put the gpu in the pci with no power going to the card the computer booted up.


One more scenario that happened now that I remember. On the first start up with the r9 I was able to go into bios and change my settings for OC. Once I tried to boot into Windows my issues started with the computer not booting up properly.

Okay I have an update. I just got my GPU workin again. Here is the following things I did.

Found the latest bios version
Uninstalled AMD software
Then proceeded to update bios
Once loaded changed my pci to PUB
Shut down and put card back in and Boom!
Reinstalled Software

Even though I did all these items I now have a new PSU coming. Should I mail it back or install it? Its a EVGA 1000w

If you are actually using that much power then a 1000w unit would be good.

I only have one card. Thiese numbers are coming from the calc that is offered on the site. I just put in what hardware I have and thats what they recommend

Personally I wouldn't recommend a PSU that large for it. But still the possibility it is the PSU failing so if you already have it on the way, might as well use it.
