New cpu, horrible fps!

Hi guys, got rid of my fx 8350 and got an i5 6600k the other day. I have a gtx 970 with it already. So i installed this cpu kinda expecting what i paid for it, instead i have a windows 10 that keeps getting stuck or randomly going slow, and fps drops from 300-20 fps in games like league of legends, which makes the computer jumpy and laggy! Ive checked my drivers and none are yellow so i think they are fine? Ive checked temps and they are fine! Someome please help me, thanks, rob.

Not tryna look like a cock, but are you serious? The amount of people telling me that the i5 would get me better performace was insane! With my olf fx chip and same gtx 970 in was getting better fps on the same settings?

1) First of all, did you reinstall Windows?
Including:
Intel driver update software

2) If you did, or do so now, then:

a) run Memtest86 for a full pass (free version www.memtest86.com ) to verify your DDR4 memory

b) run Intel CPU diagnostic https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/19792/Intel-Processor-Diagnostic-Tool-64-bit-

Open Task Manager (right-click Start Menu) prior to the test and choose "Performance->CPU" then make the CPU graph so it shows FOUR graphs. When the test is running you should see all four graphs go to 100% usage, and the "Speed" should show roughly your max turbo value for when all four cores are used. That MIGHT be about 3.6GHz on default settings but I'm guessing (3.9GHz, non-overclocked, for one main core used.. drops a bit as more cores are used)

On a side note, you can change these values a bit such as overclocking but revisit that when things work fine. Keep default for now.

c) run a benchmark and compare score to similar setups. For example, Firestrike.

Summary:
Start there. If that doesn't work we can look a different way.

FYI,
There's no gaming scenario I'm aware of where the i5-6600K should perform worse. You obviously have an issue.

THIS is pretty typical (stock settings) where a game like Tomb Raider has minimal CPU bottleneck, but a game like Bioshock Ultimate has more. It's worth noting that the frame rates here are already quite playable but these are just examples:

Also note that HIGHER RESOLUTIONS tend to be more GPU bottlenecked. Observe the difference between 720p and 1080p.

*The i5-6600K appears to be just over 40 to 50% faster per core depending on how well the application uses the architecture. At 720p in Bioshock Infinite the i5-6600K scored 46% faster!!

In games like Starcraft 2 that only use two cores well that might mean you get closer to 60FPS instead of normally 40FPS. I can't speak for LoL, and of course if you had a great frame rate already it won't affect things much.

Of course major drops where the game worked before sounds like something pretty buggy in the hardware or software.

You are correct. Your configuration should easily run LoL at max graphics with at least 100 fps+ consistently, and almost all titles at max graphics. with 60fps+.
A common cause of lag spikes in games is when the desktop changes backgrounds. It may also be caused by missing drivers, especially the intel chipset ones.
Also, did you check temps for both CPU and GPU while running the games? Heat spikes may toggle thermal throttling of the GPU.

I haven't reinstalled windows, no. problem is, it thinks mine is a fake windows when its not, so I don't want it asking me for a key again :/ ive installed intel chipset off the asus website for my motherboard.

Install Intel XTU to monitor your CPU temperature and also check if it throttles when FPS drops from 300 to 20.

I agree with previous answers, it is either 2 drivers interfering with each other or a throttling issue.

I would reinstall windows fresh, if it wasn't reinstalled there are almost certainly driver conflicts with leftovers from the amd system. It's never a good idea to just switch hardware (mobo/cpu) without reinstalling. If the copy of windows is legal you should have a key for it. Something already sounds off if it's a legit copy of windows and wga is reporting it's not, maybe a bad install or corrupt files. Without a solid foundation and properly working/configured os with updates applied new hardware may not work very well.

^ exactly what synphul says - you can't completely change mb, chipsets & CPU (especially from amd to Intel & vice versa) & just plug your os drive back in without expecting problems
There will be so many driver & system remnants left from the amd hardware that you're going to get loads of problems.
Imvsurprised it even booted in all honesty!
