750w Corsair CPU
GTX 970 G1 Edition
16GB RAM
i5-6400 (Stock Cooler)

Looking for a CPU upgrade for a few hundred GBP. An example is the I7-700k however from what i read it has poor price-performance although I am not sure if this was during a supply shortage the threads were posted. Would like to hear recommendations and whether or not a third party cooler would be recommended.
Main use for PC is gaming however my PC in general is starting to feel sluggish.

Solution
with the 7700K at $400 on Amazon, it is clearly not a player.

That sort of money will get you an R5-3600X and a mainboard.

300 GBP may not go as far as we'd like after VAT (i.e., taxes)..

I'd add 100 GBP to it if you can, and, better yet perhaps 500 GBP might score a R5-5600X and a B550 combo..

Maybe not the K variant.
Assuming that FrogHater has a locked motherboard, to go with the locked i5 processor,
(unless the 6700k is cheaper or costs the same price) the K variant mayn't be worth the extra money, because the only different between the 6700, and K, is that the 6700k can be overclocked, and FrogHater probably had a MOBO with a locked chipset, such as H110 B150 Q150 H170 Q170 without unlocked CPU multiplier.

Otherwise, it wouldn't make sense to pair a heavily locked CPU with an unlocked Z chipset.

They are also using an Intel stock cooler, and it wouldn't make sense to buy an unlocked CPU, with a mediocre cooler.

It's only a matter of time before I replace the board and get an AMD chipset with the way things are so I guess now is a perfect opportunity. Thanks for the help mate.
