Should I upgrade my gaming system from an i5 3470 to an i5 3570k

Or should I upgrade my Nvidia GT 640 to a GTX 650, I really don't play that many games but I would still like to upgrade in order to "future proof"

thanks :)

Solution
There is little point in future proofing, much better to grab the x40 or x50 a few years down the line which will likely be about the same price point but also more performance than today's 640/650

This is especially true if you're not gaming. The 640 will have plenty of power to make sure your OS UI is smooth as butter

Also for non-gaming/non-oc the 3470 is more than enough

Spend the money on a few nice meal or a holiday :D or some games :p

What do you do with your pc if not gaming (excluding the usual stuff)?

Probably the GPU upgrade, you won't notice too much difference in that CPU upgrade, the gtx 650 isn't too strong of a card though so maybe wait a little longer and save up for at least a gtx 650 ti? It really depends on what game you play. If you don't play games that are demanding at all and are happy with the gt 640 performance maybe just wait it out for the next generation of graphics cards which are expected some time this year

Hi there!

We really need more details...

What is your budget and what are your other system specs like power supply, ram, motherboard, case?

No one here would ever recommend upgrading from a 3470 to a 3570k. If you can, going from a GT640 to a GTX660 would be a huge upgrade, but then it all depends on budget and power supply specs and your overall computer build (is it a dell etc).

Intel core i5 3470 @3.2Ghz
Nvidia GT 640 2Gb
Gigabyte GA-B75M-D3H
Kingston Hyper X 8gb DDR3 @ 1600 MHz
1TB WD Blue
3TB Seagate
700 WATT OCZ ModXtreme Pro PSU

My specs^ its a custom build and my budget is around $250 maybe a little bit more, no more than $300
BTW; any suggestion on what I could/should upgrade?

Go with this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130825
It's easily within your budget and it will give good performance for whatever you're doing. If you want to spend a bit more go for this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814187198

There is nothing to upgrade if you're not gaming

There is also no need to future proof as I stated earlier it will be better to upgrade in the future where you can get much better performance for the same price

You could grab a nice SSD with the money and save the rest

Thank you delightful ducklings! What is the difference between 660 and 660 ti?

660 ti has better performance due to better graphics engine, without going all wikipedia on you I can't really explain further :p Just know that it is better. However if you don't plan on playing any games don't get a new graphics card, if you do game though it will be a worthwhile upgrade
