New cpu seems slower then old one (i3 4160 to i7 4790k)

just upgraded from my old i3 4160 to the i7 4790k and it honestly feels slower i don't know whats going wrong. A lot of my apps keep not responding along with my fps being lower in games then what it was with the i3.

specs are : i7 4790k, b85-g43 msi mb, gtx 960 4gb asus windforce and 2 x 8gb gb gskill ram

pls help!

Hi..
The 4790K is faster than the 4160 in every way (core count, core clock, cache, etc)

There could be many things causing your pc to "feel" slower..

I would suggest running the test from "userbenchmark" and see how your CPU performs against other 4790ks that have been tested.

All the hardware looks fine except:

That's a big cause of things "feeling slow"

Rather install windows to the SSD and not the ancient 500gb hard drive.

Also: "Very high background CPU (32%). High background CPU reduces benchmark accuracy. Find active processes with windows task manager (CTRL+SHIFT+ESC)."

You seem to have a lot of stuff running in the background. I'd take a look at that.

You might also want to check what version bios you're currently running. If it's any version less than 3.7 consider updating to the latest bios. I'm not sure why it should feel any slower if the only thing you upgraded/changed was your cpu. You would have been using the same old hard drive with the same programs running on the i3.

It might also be worth checking the cpu temps with something like realtemp just to make sure the cpu isn't overheating. An i7 does run hotter than an i3, maybe the cooling isn't adequate or the cooler didn't mount properly during the reinstall. High cpu usage as Faux_Grey pointed out doesn't help, likely a background task/process, av scan or update, windows update etc.

The other thing is if the cpu was highly active it's also possible there was high i/o activity on the drive itself as the cpu was accessing data. A background task causing cpu usage and drive i/o activity competing with a current task you're trying to perform whether it's a benchmark, game or anything else will cause a real slow down.

thanks for the help guys! did a fresh windows install and now using my ssd it seems a lot faster! my hdd was full of so much junk!... still getting about 12 to 20% cpu usage with only steam and google open tho, is that still bad or normal?

Depends on what's using your CPU. Check in the task manager.
