I am upgrading my pc in the coming months, Main parts being the GPU, CPU, Motherboard and the case. I currently have a Phenom 2 1090t. I am thinking of upgrading to the 4790k. Is this a good upgrade, meaning will i see a big difference with this or will i need to go higher? My PC will be mostly used for gaming.

It's currently the flagship 4-core Intel CPU. However, strictly as far as gaming goes, it's not going to be any faster than a cheaper i5, or even the higher end AMD FX series CPUs depending on the GPU you would be pairing it with.

980 should be a great GPU :) Anyways, it all depends on your budget. Unless you need to save some $, I'd stick w/ Intel as well. Outside of game, except for some pretty specific software, the Intel i5/i7 would beat the 8-core AMD chips. If you went with an i5-4690k, it's gaming performance should be pretty much identical unless a particular game can utilize the 4 extra "virtual" threads on the 4790k. At best even in this scenario, it's probably a few FPS performance difference at best. They're both capable of overclocking if your interested. The i5 is around $100 cheaper though.

The Core i7 4790K does better than the 4690K in about every single game by around 3 to 12 FPS. I think most of those extra FPS come from that huge 4.0GHz base and 4.4GHz boost clock rather than the hyperthreading. So I'd get the Core i5 4690K and overclock it if you want to try and close the performance gap between the two processors. The Core i5 4690K at stock speed is plenty fast enough for gaming and you could even get by just fine on a Core i5 4440. Personally I like to have the option to overclock though so I got the 4690K.

I guess I have to retract my previous post :( theonerm2 is right. I wouldn't have thought there was that kind of a performance difference between the two CPUs. I should have looked closer at the numbers instead of just skimming the articles. The 4790k is a nice bump in performance in both single and multi GPU configuration. To sum it up, if money isn't a problem, I'd go w/ the 4790K, or OC a 4690K. Either way, even without OC'ing, they're both fast.

Probably be a bottleneck there, though how much I couldn't say. I looked at a review comparing an AMD Fx 8350 vs 4770k I believe using 980 SLI. The AMD was generally a bit slower, and the 8350 should be a bit faster than your 1090t.
