New Desktop for Gaming

Hello,
I am planning on getting a new desktop soon and I have been thinking of building my own, but I have very little idea of how to go about this. What I want from the new desktop is to be able to play an MMO, like Guild Wars 2, at max settings and not want to kill myself.

It definitely doesn't need to be top of the line, I don't want to spend to much on it. So, if anyone has any suggestions to what kind of parts I should get or a pre-built computer that won't cost me an arm and a leg, it would be much appreciated.

Building your own PC isn't too hard, most anyone can do it with a little research and preparation.

Alright, thanks guys, so here's my filled out template:

Approximate Purchase Date: December 2012

Budget Range: The whole thing, I am looking at under 700$

System Usage from Most to Least Important: The biggest thing I care about is being able to play most MMOs without any problems. Other than that I will be surfing the web

Are you buying a monitor: No


Parts to Upgrade: Well. A whole new desktop

Do you need to buy OS: Yes

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: newegg, but mostly because it's one of the few I actually know.

Location: Everett, WA.

Parts Preferences: Nvidia graphics, not too many preferences

Overclocking: Maybe (Don't know how, but maybe one day)

SLI or Crossfire: Not sure what that means

Your Monitor Resolution: 1440x900

Additional Comments: Basically, it needs to run games like Guild Wars 2 well

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: Current laptop can't do what I want it to do and it's falling apart. Also, would rather have a trusty desktop.

Pretty similar to what TheBigTroll suggests, and if you can afford to go $40-50 over budget, then some of the parts he picked out are better options (RAM, Case, PSU). He also makes a very good point about the timeframe, things will be different in December.

Yeah... like I said, if he can afford to go a little over budget, case is one of the things I would definitely replace. There are a lot of options for only a few bucks more, but as it is I came out with 10 cents to spare 😛

An extra $50 would allow for some big improvements.
