New f2a85V-pro, PATA CD with IDE-to_SATA converter; system doesn't see CD

I haven't built a computer for a while; everything changed!
I have a new F2A85V-PRO mobo with a CD/DVD r/w device, and it is connected vi an IDE-to-SATA converter. I've inserted a Ubuntu 12.04 DVD, but the system doesn't seem to see the DVD drive. All I get is the

I didn't plan on this rebuild. $$$ is a consideration. The CD/DVD drives I saw at the local Fry's were nearly all bluetooth and mostly expensive (more like $70 to $200). There were some cheapo bagged drives, no boxes, no description, and I couldn't tell if they were read only or write or what. The IDE to SATA converter seemed like a good option.

Not only that, I get stubborn and want to figure this out, even with help!

As I play with the system, I'm observing that it does not see the CD/DVD drive, but it does recognize the HDD (no OS on it yet though). Is there a possibility that the DVD is old enough that it just doesn't get seen?

I also have an external SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 converter on the old, loaded hard drive, though that's not installed. The intent was to temporarily mount that externally so I could pull some files off of it once the computer is running (the old drive has ubuntu 10.11 on it, upgraded to 12 something which caused the video to crap out for lack of support, all of which started this little exercise. I don't know if the system will boot from a USB connection, since I haven't even figured out if it will boot from the SATA I've chosen.

Well crap. This is embarrassing. There was another power cable to hook up to the CD/DVD >sigh<
Now the system recognizes the drive.
It still doesn't see it as a boot device though, so I can't read it. And I just checked, per another thread, and yes the DVD drive is set as master.

Well, I have an answer.
The system does see the DVD drive. But it won't boot from it.
After a lot of searching, I finally found this tidbit:

Q: Does this device require any drivers?
A: No, it does not require any special drivers. Both operating systems of Windows & Mac have pre-loaded driver.

The system can SEE the drive through the IDE/SATA converter, but can't use it without the drivers. And I'm trying to load an initial OS (ubuntu), which means there aren't any drivers. Catch-22.
So I was forced to buy a cheap, downgrade DVD drive.

Didn't see that coming. Thanks to all for the suggestions.
