New Fiber Service, but I don't want their hardware

We will be switching to fiber for our Internet and our provider pushes their own hardware for their technicians to service. I personally would like to have my own better router then the one they provide, but need to make sure I purchase something compatible. I was told by a representative that their routers have a built in modem and that the line coming from the wall that would connect to the router/modem is Ethernet.

Do I really need a modem if the wall connection is Ethernet or is my ISP pulling my leg?

If I need a modem, are there any that have an Ethernet LAN in & out?

Can I get an Ethernet-to-DSL or Ethernet-to-Coax connection just to use with a modem and how much would that negatively effect my speed?

Solution
the modem is needed to decode the signal. you don't need the router part but since it is built in you get it anyway.

but you have to use their modem.

do see if they have one you can buy though. better to drop $100 on it now then to give em $10 a month forever for it

Which specific ISP is this? It makes a difference.
