Nuremberg Toy Fair Seminar (lot´s of info)

Posts: 10 Just got word from the GW seminar held in Nuremberg, so this
info is very reliable. I´ll leave the 40k stuff out on this board.

For those of you that can read german can read the original text here:

Ugh, what a horrid idea. But what about new Lizards?

Plastic Plague

Finally, a specific date. Might have money by theen (though I doubt
it).

Hmm, they must have good poise to balance like that... But are the
Warhawks plastic? That's the important thing.

Boo hiss.

The current ones aren't that old. The riders themselves certainly need
revision and more Saurus plastics are very nice. I'd hope for the
ability to convert into Horned Ones for skinks.

> - Skink Chars.

About time. We've only been waiting two editions.

> - Skink Special Char.

Tenehuain. No surprise there. From fluff, though, I recall that Nakai
the Kroxigor was somehow involved in the Rise of Sotek business -
let's see him get a special character too.

> - plastic Plague Monks (in very long coats)

Bleh, bleh, bleh.

> - HE boltthrower

Looks good.

> - HE mage

Look okay.

> - HE heroes

Look good. No new Swordmasters, though? Boo, hiss. I still think it's
a shame Luthor Harkon won't be involved - it's hard to think of a
better opportunity to introduce him.

Very odd. So the trees move with them? I like the angry bush
appearance myself.

> - plastic box that is used to make both archers and spearmen.

No. That won't work - why do you think HE and Brets got different
boxes for spearmen and archers? Let's just hope the archers are the
good-looking way of configuring the models.

> - gladeriders are in the book.

This is news? They've been in the list in one form or another for six
editions so far, so this hardly comes as a surprise.

plastic box with new elven horses,
> contains 8 models.

Nice, but I'd rather have had these in metal if it would let them
split archers and Glade Guard into separate boxes.

> - new wardancer models, very agile

So they're actually Warpigeon Surfers? This is not promising, though
plausibility aside I can live with the image of an elf standing on the
bird to fire. What about the hawk - presumably it uses the plastic
Bretonnian pegasus wings, but is it metal or plastic-bodied?

> - old dragon model, two new riders one with a bow and one standing on
> top with a spear.

That's odd - no other dragon gets two riders. Are they special
characters? If so, one would presumably have to be removed for a
'generic' dragon. I like the fact that they're keeping the old
leaf-scaled dragon, though, and not using the Talisman dragon. What
about new unit choices, new Treemen, new and special characters?

To be honest, Phil, Warhawks were only marginally less ridiculous than
the Skaven exercise wheel. With standing riders, the Woodsies have
eclipsed the Doomwheel in ridiculousness. IMO, it would have been
better for GW to have simply nixed the ridden Warhawks in favor of plain
Warhawks.

Yeah, we all really wanted to see the new Warhawk surfers.

At the rate I'm progressing, I'll be all set to add Swordmasters for my
WFB7 HE army.

I'm sure it'll "work" just as well as it does for the Dark Elves.

If the Woodsies are balanced and sell nicely, you can expect them to
split for their WFB8 release.

Don't be silly. Those plastics will have to last quite some time, and
GW is moving as far away from metal as possible.

Merely "not promising?" Try "incredibly stupid".

When you see the price for an all-metal Dragon, with a 2nd Character
model that you're forced to buy, and after UK prices rise to meet the
rest of the world, you *bet* it'll be "special".

Tho this isn't surprising, as the WE Dragon rider is really bad.

Yeah, I'd have figured GW to consolidate the Elven Dragons.

Apparently there are moves afoot to reclassify the agoutis (including
capybaras) so they wouldn't be rodents any more. A capybara rider
might actually work, but not a Skaven one.

They can surf a Warpigeon and watch Lord of the Rings at the same
time?! Trust GW to take one of the more stupid parts of the film as
their inspiration.

I liked the Doomwheel - I think those who didn't were missing the
point that Skaven are *supposed* to be a comedy army.

With standing riders, the Woodsies have

If it wasn't for the desperate need for variety in the WE list I'd
recommend dumping the hawks altogether and forming WE Great Eagles
into units (with a minimum size 1 so that the sacrificial eagle trick
would still work). Okay, Warhawk Riders make better archers than Glade
Riders, but aside from that they're completely redundant, and a lot
weaker in combat.

Dark Elves have crossbows, which are held along the chest - that works
in the same way as Empire Militia with crossbows do. Even so the DE
Spearmen would probably be better with their own set; modelwise
crossbow-armed DE are definety the better of the two.

Okay, the PMs are decent enough. The special characters (presumably
Skrolk's the one with the censer-staff thing) are really bad.

Definitely new riders - you can't pose the current spears like that
and these are actually riding the Cold Ones conventionally rather than
slouching over/falling off them like the current ones. As for the COs,
I don't much care for the heads and I can't see the bodies all that
well - at first glance the detail seems a little poor and the
proportions odd. Then again, I didn't like the plastic Saurus when I
only had photos to go on, but in the plastic they're outstanding
models. At the moment, though, my inclination would be to go with new
plastic Saurus riders and current Cold Ones (maybe with these ones'
heads). Looks as though these have been designed with the idea that a
Skink Terradon Rider could slouch on them to make Horned One Riders.

sure.

Mixed in with two flavors of Dwarves along with Greenskins, Skaven
were/are hardly any more of a comedy army than the rest.

Given that they're getting forest daemons, I'd saw WE are getting fair
variety. And compared with other ranges, I'd saw WE are ahead of the
game. DE/HE/WE all have basic missile and spear infantry, light cav,
and 2 flavors of HtH, mages, and a Dragon. We have trees where DE/HE
get heavy troops and cav. So the army mix would still be reasonable and
appropriate.

I figure I've got at least another 4-5 years before I have to worry
about WFB8 coming out, and as the Swordmasters won't have been redone in
2 editions by that point, I figure they'll get new sculpts for the new

The Elven plastic infantry are generally ugly, with the Dark Elf
Warriors the worst by far.

Only in a relative sense, I'm sure.

Thanks.
Those monks look a bit boring.
My metal censor bearers are rather top heavy though.
Plastic ones might be more practical.
It's an odd idea to make the plastic monks pretty much completely
incompatible with the existing metals.

I'd rather have had plastic slaves, but what the hell I already made a bunch
of goblins up for slaves.

I bought part of a lizardman army second hand some time ago.
Then I got some new stuff to go with....
Never really got the enthusiasm together to make those.

OK, I am not hugely excited over the new Cold Ones, but at least they
match the new-style Saurus.

Still no idea what that list involves - rumours so far suggest it
won't be much more than splitting Dryads into several unit types in
the sublist. As with Southlands, don't expect any specific models for
Forest Spirits-only units.

And compared with other ranges, I'd saw WE are ahead of the

HE and DE both have an RBT and a chariot. DE have four flavours of
close combat infantry (other than Warriors) and one heavy cavalry
unit. HE have four close combat infantry units other than Spearmen
(counting Sea Guard) and two heavy cav units. WE have two close combat
infantry units other than Glade Guard (Wardancers and Dryads) and no
heavy cavalry, they have no chariot and no war machine. Over the
others they have one more unridden monster than the HE and one more
flyer unit, but that's it. I think they could do with some kind of
scouting close combat unit and/or a unit with great weapons or
halberds (they're the only Elf race without either of those weapon
types, and I think great weapons would be thematically more suitable
than halberds).

WD Aus has previews of next month's releases over here - the HE
Battalion (16 Spearmen, 16 Archers, 8 Silver Helms, 1 RBT) and two
unit 'packs' - White Lions and Swordmasters, both using the current
models.

Have you actually got any of them? I have to admit I made a mistake
with my Spearmen in posing them - they're pointing their weapons
everywhere and in a unit look a messy rabble - but individually
they're good. By the simple expedient of replacing the heads in the
set with spare helmets from the Spearmen plastics, HE Archers become
good models.
