Hi – My 15 yr old son wants to build a gaming computer. I have a little experience building a computer, as I built one several years ago. I started looking at the build he has and would appreciate any feedback or suggestions you may have. He will use keyboard, mouse and monitor that he currently has for now but we will upgrade those devices within a few months.

Thank you so much for your help.

Here is the link to the build:

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/GgwxQ6

And below, I have completed the Ask the Community template:

Approximate Purchase Date: (e.g. this week, next week))

Budget Range: (e.g.: 1300-1500) After Rebates

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming, surfing the internet, livestreaming)

Parts Not Required: Keyboard, mouse, speakers, monitors (will add separately)

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: (e.g.: amazon, newegg.com, but very flexible)

Country: USA

Parts Preferences: by brand or type : Intel 7 chip with options on mobo, full tower case (for ease of build), liquid cooling, nice graphics card (pretty flexible on all parts – but I like Asus, Gigabyte, Corsair, samsung)

Overclocking: Rather not, at least for now

SLI or Crossfire: No, probably not

Monitor Resolution: will be purchased separately,

Additional Comments: Solid gaming computer for my son, capable of good graphics, framerate and online playing.

Nothing wrong with your build but I have made adjustments for better price to performance.

rationale:
The 13600k is significantly faster than an 11700k as well as more modern.

Downsized the aio to 280mm version since it was considerably less money, however the 360 would still be fine.

Picked a decent compatible board for the 13600k. A Z690 you buy new should come with the BIOS update for 13th gen, however you could consult the retailer if you aren't sure, otherwise spend $50 more for a Z790.

Changed the ram to a similar spec RGB kit that is $40 less and still from a reputable brand.

I changed the GPU to an Radeon RX 6700xt. It is considerably faster overall than the 3060 for the same price, however it does not do as well in ray tracing if that is important to your son.

Changed the PSU to a much cheaper but still very good model.

I would not go with an 11th gen chip. 13th gen is far better. A 6700xt is quite a bit faster, than that 3060, and the same price. I went DDR5 for better future support.

If you happen to live near a microcenter, you could do an AM5 build, and have more future upgrade options.

Thank you for the suggestions. I will look over them with my son. ! Much appreciated!
You can save a bit of money if you wait until January 3rd when Intel releases the i5 13400 / 13400F and the i7 13700 / 13700F. The new B760 boards will also be released then and you can expect a decent one to go for less than $200.
