Hey, so I’m in the process of selling my desktop pc and instead I’m looking at a similar/more powerful laptop.
The desktop spec was:

  • Core i7K Quad Core
  • Asus Strix GTX 1080 8GB PLUS GPU
  • Intel Core i7 7700K Quad Core 4.2GHz
  • Asus Strix Z270F Gaming Mainboard with RGB Lighting
  • Hyper X Predator 16Gb DDR4 3200Mhz RAM
  • Samsung 960 EVO 250GB M.2 SSD with Seagate 4TB HDD & 32GB Intel Optane
  • Aerocool P7C0 Gaming Case with RGB Lighting
  • Aerocool Project 7 RGB 650W Fully Modular PSU
  • Windows 10 Home

I can spend upwards of £1700 but ideally was £1200-1400

Solution
There are laptops with desktop class CPUs (-S series, e.g. i7 9700k), but they are very expensive and would typically cost well north of £1400.

Mobile CPUs (H series, e.g. i7 9750H) would be similar in performance for some tasks, and perhaps not so good for others.

You can look at custom laptop specs on places like Scan, Cyberpower, PC Specialist, etc

If you need CPU horsepower for the work uses then possibly something with an -S series CPU e.g.

These laptops tend not to be particularly small and light, however, or cheap. A laptop with an -H series CPU would let you get a better GPU, for probably a lower price, and certainly in a smaller/lighter...

Recommendations depend if you're bothered about 15.6"/17.3" - and about having a gsync screen.

I wouldn't buy one, personally. You can generally get similar hardware for hundreds of £ less with a custom laptop spec, which are usually built on Clevo/Tongfang/Quanta chassis.

And apparently the Asus's performance is a smidge behind competitors too:

I'm sure it's fine, but for £1800 and ~£200-£300 more than the competition offering a similar spec with marginally better performance too, I'd want more than fine :)
