New Gaming PC Build

Well, this thread is basicly like everyone elses, I'm building a new system and this is the first time I build one from scratch, so im hoping for a little feedback on the choices I made. Here is a list of what I have so far:

I have a couple of questions for anyone thats willing to answer them...
- first of all, are all the parts I have selected compatible?
- is it worth it to buy the motherboard and cpu in that bundle?
- is the psu overkill/too expensive?
- do i really need the cpu fan or is the one included enough?
- would i need to include a modem? I currently have a home network set up in our house, should I just run a cable to the new pc?

If I forgot anything or need something extra please let me know.

I was also planning on a budget of $1,000.00, which doesn't mean I have to spend that much, it's more of how much I'm willing to spend. Any advice on cutting corners but keeping performace to a max would be helpful. Oh, a mouse, keyboard and speakers were not included on purpose, I currently own some I'm going to be using with this build.

Just for reference I plan to use the pc mainly for gaming, i want to be able to run games like WoW and CoD4 on the best graphic setting available, I would also like to be able to multitask as much as possible, ex. surfing the web, downloading music/videos, playing a game, checking e-mails and just generally running multiple programs at once.

Any help will be much appreciated.

CoD4 on an 8600? You're crazy. Get a 4850 or, if that is too much money, and 9600GT or 3870


The mobo is a MicroATX board, which means it's shrunk down from the normal size. You don't want one of those if you can avoid it. Get a standard ATX board. Also, don't get the power supply. It's 12v current is only 36A. And it's very overpriced too. Check out one of these two:

The box cooler is OK. And by that I mean "Your CPU won't burn up with it......probably.....it is at least warrantied for 3 years".

No networking junk is needed. Just run an ethernet cable from the onboard LAN jack to your router.

LOL, you want to play game but buy a graphics card suitable for Word and Excel. You need a gaming card, like HD 4850. Read this thread:

for the $40 extra I would strongly recommend getting the 4850 man, It will last you longer

why not a p35 or p45 motherboard, much better for overclocking and it supports crossfire if you wanna do crossfire later.... yeah and go with the 4850, u wont regret it

alright so i have read over your build with the changes and i will give you a 8.3/10

i will tell you why later first i will answer your questions in order....

so far i see no general compatibility issues

the CPU fan isn't needed unless you are hoping to overclock however it a lot of CPU fans are more quite than the included one if that makes a difference to you



well as for the second you have already changed which is good it really isn't worth it

the silencer you have picked out now is a great PSU for any mid range system which at 1000 buck is what you will have

you don't need a modem unless you are running dial up.... so i would say ship it.... as for DSL, cable, T1 internet the most motherboards have build in Ethernet ports for that

ok on to my suggestions.... i will do them in order of your first post

CASE: just fine Ultra makes good quality cases

MOBO: for Nvidia i would go with a 750i chipset and for ATI would say the P45 chipset is the way to go (Asus is a great brand)(your second choice was way better tho)

CPU: the C2D 8400 is an excellent CPU for everything you are doing

RAM: i would go with 4 gb of DDR2 corsair 800mhz memory

GPU: your was good but a 4850 for ATI or a Nvidia 9800GT is where i would go. (the 4850 will give you more preformance)

CPU cooler: if you do get one i would say this on instead

SYSTEM fans: skip doesn't matter

DVD drive: skip doesn't matter as long as it is a SATA drive

hard drive: i would go with a 500GB western digital

PSU: i have already said i love the silencer you chose

OS: make sure you want vista and if you do get the 64 bit not the 32 bit

Monitor: just fine

overall good build

the big problems with your build are the mobo you chose is an older chipset, you are going to want 4 gb of RAM with vista, the 9600gt is a good card but COD4 is the highest i can run if you want even a little staying power you are going to need a bit more

i am pretty sure my recommendations stay under 1000....
