I just purchased an HP Pavilion Power 580-023w Gaming Tower from Walmart. On the video card, there is DVI, HDMI, and display port connections. This the 2nd one, the first one I returned because of this exact problem. No video with DVI or HDMI. The only way to video output is using a display adapter with DVI. I've checked it with another monitor just to rule out that. This PC has a pretty high-end video card, a GTX 1060 3GB Graphics. Why it won't use the DVI or HDMI is driving me crazy. I'm getting ready to return this one as well if I can't figure it out for another model pc. What am I missing...seems to be pretty straightforward.

Yes, I installed latest drivers. When the DVI or HDMI cables are plugged in the monitor light goes from amber to blue, but absolutely nothing is displayed on the screen. When I plug in the display port adapter with the DVI attached to it, the screen immediately comes on showing my desktop. The first tower I got...exact same one, had the exact same issues...that's why I returned for another one. Get home, plug in dvi...nothing...hdmi...nothing...then I thought...hmm I have a display port adapter...let me give that a whirl...video instantly came on. It just doesn't make sense to me why the DVI wouldn't work right out of the box?

Yeah, I'd be wondering about its functionality too. I'm really surprised HP put their name on it. But for $500 it really isn't that bad a deal. The CPU and GPU alone is worth almost $400 retail. Plus, retail cost for Win10 alone starts at around $110. For gaming (which she doesn't do) it would be a great budget machine... if it wasn't for the work-around you need to do with the video output.
I'm afraid only you can decide what to do with the machine and with your money. You'll probably have to spend quite a bit more to get the equivalent in a... 'normal' machine. If it's working fine otherwise, and she's happy with it, it may be worth it to keep it and live with its oddities.

Btw... what PSU did they put in the machine to run...

Are you using a good DVI-D cable from monitor to gfx card?
Are you using a good HDMI cable from monitor to gfx card?
You're not inadvertently plugging into the motherboard video ports, are you? Speaking of which, what video outputs are available on the motherboard itself? Might take the card out temporarily and try the ports on the motherboard using the iGPU.

This was a black Friday special and I think it was made exclusively for Walmart. It has no video outputs on the motherboard at all. The motherboard did have 2 HDMI ports but they are blocked off on the i/o shield. https://www.walmart.com/ip/HP-Pavilion-Power-580-023w-Gaming-Tower-Intel-Core-i5-7400-NVIDIA-GTX-1060-3GB-Graphics-8-GB-Memory-1TB-Hard-Drive-Windows-10/803136621

I just double checked the HDMI cable...I pulled one from my tv which is new and tried that...same thing...no video. The DVI cable works just fine on my other tower as well.

I guess I will have to use the display adapter port, which does work fine...I just didn't want to take a chance on something being wrong with the video card. What are the odds the exact same thing happening to 2 towers...slim.

Something sounds fishy about that deal. And may be an indicator of the problem. The board has video IO ports but the IO shield has them blanked out? Really odd. Never seen that before.

Do you remember if all the models of that PC were like that? I doubt the card is bad. Especially since you replaced it and the PC with the same model. I suspect something else, but can't imagine what it could be unless the board itself is screwy. Can you read the make model of the board? It should be printed somewhere around the center of the board.

Ya...I thought that was strange as well. The motherboard model is IPM17-002 and on the hp website is states Integrated video is not available if a graphics card is installed.https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04790427. This for my wife's Xmas present and she's not a gamer, it just was a good deal for 500 bucks... I'm on the fence about just returning this model and getting something that's not so squirrely. https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-pavilion-power-580-000-desktop-pc-series/16425610/model/17345625/document/c05355651

They put in a 300-watt power supply, and the video card is a hp branded card HP P/N 909616-001. I'm going to return it...its just to quirky for me to feel 100% about this system. and I found a comparable system HP - Refurbished Pavilion Desktop - Intel Core i5 - 16GB Memory - AMD Radeon R7 450 - 1TB Hard Drive for 469.99. 30 bucks less, double the memory and a stand-alone video card which is considerably lower in specs but as a non-gaming system, it will work just fine.

They shipped a GTX 1060 with a 300W PSU!?

Crap. I wonder if that isn't in some way responsible for the card's oddities. At startup I wouldn't think so, tho. No load at that time to speak of. Still...

Hey, how were they powering the 6-pin on the card? Molex adapter?

They put a GTX 1060 in a PC with a 300W PSU?! Unbelievable. Can you post a pic of the nameplate on the PSU and another of the 6pin connector you say you found. I'm really curious now.
