I was thinking about building a new gaming pc and wondered if you guys could have a look at the specs and let me know what you think?
amd athlon x4 860k
Asus A88XM-PLUS/CSM Micro ATX FM2+ Motherboard
Kingston Fury Black Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
MSI Radeon R9 280 3GB TWIN FROZR Video Card
Corsair 350D Window MicroATX Mid Tower Case
EVGA 600B 600W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply
i already have a 840 evo and a 500gb cavair blue for storage

Solution
I recommend a Z97 based motherboard to allow for a future cpu upgrade. It allows for even a future 14nm broadwell cpu upgrade.
You can find them for $80 us.
Look for ECS Z97-PK(V1.0)
or ASRock Z97M Anniversary

The graphics card is probably the most important part for the fast action gamer.
A R9-280 is a good card. 270X would be almost as good. You will need a 550w psu. I might suggest a 650w psu regardless. It will allow you a future graphics upgrade to a card as good as a GTX980. It should cost little more.
Whatever, buy only a quality psu.

Quick correction, this is an athlon x4 not a A10. So "technically" it's not an APU but a CPU with a disabled igpu.

However I still agree, those cpus don't have a lot of juice. I suggest getting either a cheap i5 4430 or a i3 4130.

Haha, didn't even think of that, thanks. I just consider them the equivalent of an APU but without the graphics.

i was hoping to spend between £400 and £450 so an i3 or i5 is out of my budget with the r9 280,
would the i3 be better with a cheaper gpu? like the 750 ti than the athlon and the 280?

I'd say something like this:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Pentium G3258 3.2GHz Dual-Core Processor (£47.98 @ Amazon UK)
Motherboard: ASRock Z97M Anniversary Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard (£63.48 @ Ebuyer)
Memory: G.Skill Ares Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory (£65.88 @ Ebuyer)
Video Card: XFX Radeon R9 280X 3GB Black Edition Double Dissipation Video Card (£185.99 @ Scan.co.uk)
Power Supply: EVGA 750W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply (£66.60 @ Aria PC)

PCPartPicker doesn't have the 350D, so you would have to factor that into the price.

I'd take the ASRock Z97 Anniversary edition for the extra $15.

Your above build has the M12II 520W. It's not available in the UK unless you buy from vendors that have it outrageously priced. Switch to EVGA B2 or something :)

ok, didn't know it wasn't in the UK thx for the info.

A graphics card is about the easiest part to upgrade. I think you would be pleased with a GTX750ti if you are budget constrained.
