New gaming system: is it worth it for me?

It's been a few years and I'm considering having an inexpensive system refit.
Use: I play simple games- Fallout 4, Civilisation V- but looking forward to this autumn's releases of Dishonored 2, Watchdogs 2 and Civ VI.

My current setup:
CPU - AMD Phenom II 955 (gently oc'd to 3.7)
MB - GA-890XA-UD3 (AMD 790X + SB850 Chipset)
RAM - G.SKILL Sniper Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866
GPU - XFX R9-280A-TDFD
PSU - XFX Black Edition P1-750B-CAG9 750W ATX12V v2.2 / ESP12V v2.91

My system still puffing along, bu staring to show signs of age- occasional crashes with Fallout 4, mediocre performance for the upcoming (aforementioned) titles.

Is it worth it for me to get Intel Core i5-6600K 6M Skylake Quad-Core 3.5 GHz with, say, ASUS Z170 PRO GAMING LGA 1151? the combo will cost me upwards of $550 in Canada. Or perhaps I should get a GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3 AM3+ AMD 990FX with AMD FX-8350 for about $350?

Money is a bit of an issue these days, to be frank, and not spending more than I must is important.

(The rest of the system can stay the same, I reckon. Better GPU will blow the budget).

The i5 6600k will outperform the 8350 by a lot.

However I currently use a 3 year old 8350 on Civ 5, Fallout 4, and numerous older titles as well as Overwatch and it works fine. As for the others, I do not know. Look up some feedback on some gaming communities for those probably, or check that it is better than minimum / rec specs if you're aiming for those.

Upgrading to intel skylake will also require more RAM, fyi*

You could always look at either getting an i5 6400 or an i3 6100. Either way, don't go for the FX-8350. It's a dead platform.

AM3+ being unapgradable is still holding its value. One would expect those FX chips to go down in price lot more with the new CPU they are about to introduce.

No point buying a 8350 brand new in 2016, its 5 years old. If you don't want to go as high as a 6600k you can save money by going to a i5 6500 or 6400 with a non z170 board. They have far greater single core performance which gives massive boosts in CPU intensive titles like GTA 5, ARMA and more. They will also give you much larger upgradibility as you can upgrade to any Skylake and most upcoming Kaby Lake processors as they will feature the same socket.
