I've physically installed new Gigabyte G1 Gaming GeForce GTX 1080 but when I turn PC on only the motherboard graphics work. After several minutes, OS attempts to load but all I get is a distorted (loads of horizontal coloured lines forming a broken widows picture). Returning my EV3A GTX 680 gives me no problems at all on startup. Am I doing something stupid or is the new card duff? Each time I am using the HDMI output.

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X79-UD3
OS Windows 7 Professional
RAM: 16GB
BIOS: AM F11 05/07/2012
PSU: Corsair HX 1050

I only have one PCIe x 16 slot. The card won't fit into the x8 slot because I have other slots in use and it's blocked. Also, my GTX 680 works fine in the x16 slot so I don't think it's the slot.

So HDMI works with the 680 and not the 1080 right? Maybe try DVI or Display port and see if the hdmi port is broken.

I don't think it's the 1080 HDMI port because I get a perfectly good Gigabyte motherboard graphic on my monitor on startup. It just doesn't progress from that to booting up windows for ages and when it eventually does all I get is a distorted unreadable windows start screen.

A gpu isn't needed for most PC's to post, depends on the motherboard but just try using a different port.

OK, so I have now used the DVI and the DP ports with still the same result. I also removed my other cards (network, USB 3.0 etc) andput the 1080 in the other slot. A friend loaned me his GeForce 760 and still it hangs up without the BIOS kicking in. However, and here's the really odd thing, I tried a CMOS short, I removed the CMOS battery put in a PS2 keyboard and still the same thing happened. I borrowed another power supply and still the same result. But when I thought that I would just try the original 680 it started straight away. Work that one out!!!! I'm really really puzzled now. HELP!

Have you removed the drivers for the old gpu?

OK so I've been out, come back and switched on and there's the same hang-up with the 680 now. There are no BIOS beeps either. In answer to your earlier question, I thought I had removed the drivers for the 680 but maybe I didn't. I can't see that causing all these problems though. I think I'm about to give up.

Yup! Thanks for your help anyway. It's been a very frustrating journey!!
All the Best

No problem, good luck :)
