Hey Guys,

I am travelling to the US in couple of months and I was aiming to get few electronics when I get there.

Currently one of the things I am considering buying for my second computer at home (a file/home/multipurpose server) is a GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 650 Ti OC 1GB GDDR5 PCI-Express 3.0 Graphics Card for around 160 USD while in my country, a guy is selling his "2 months used" EVGA 01G-P3-1370-TR Geforce GTX 460 (Fermi) 1GB DDR5 for USD 120, and in fact I am trying to convince him of selling lower, I offered USD 90 but might not be doable, so 100-120 might be more doable.

Should I wait couple of months and get the 650ti, the price might be lower at that time, and it will be new, less power, 10 % faster, etc? or get the 460 1 GB now?

Solution
I would still say get the GTX 650ti. I have a feeling that that 460 won't hold for long and also the 650ti is more efficient and smaller and can be OCed more.

Think before buy why he is sell that gpu at low cost in just 2months (I think he is broken the card so no warranty from manufacturer ,if any issue in that card why he is not apply warranty , so check if it's working or not and ask him to give original bill to see before buy ,(oc also damage the card) ) this is my opinion.
if u have money buy 580 3gb its faster then 680. or buy 7970 . or wait 2 months to get 7970 at low cost.

Thanks Guys.

Well I was tempted by the 460 because I thought that if I get it for USD 90, then it will be a good bargain, this is not my main computer for heavy gaming. I am aiming to get a gtx 660 or 660 ti for my main HTPC (used as well for 120 inch casual gaming) using Full HD projector or 3d 720 p 120 Hz projector. This one is for mainly my home server and casual gaming, connected to a 23 inch 1080p Led screen Samsung XL2370.

I agree I like newer gadgets, but anyhow this computer has the MB and CPU and PSU bought as used. Eventually I might as well get the new 650ti in 2 months.

Addition: he is selling because he got a 7970 for XMAS. Warranty where I live doesnt mean much if not the first owner. And even if I get from USA, it will not be valid outside.

^ Useless benchmark. The GTX 460 1GB actually compares quite well to the 650 Ti.

Here is a meaningful benchmark comparison.

if u have money buy 580 3gb its faster then 680.

Once again a post by you with straight up incorrect information. No GTX 580 has EVER been as fast as any GTX 680.

My advice is to grab the GTX 460 if you can get it for a good price. I max every single game I have except Metro 2033 at 1920 x 1080 with mine. Metro 2033 needs the eye candy turned down a bit to play well. I have been wanting to upgrade for a while now but I really can't justify it when it's still such a good card.

Looking at it from performance vs price, if you can get the 460 for $100 you save 38% of the cost. At $120 you save 25%. The 650 Ti performs maybe just 5-10% better than the 460 so you're getting lower performance/price with the 650 Ti.

Right but you don't know how well a 460 will hold up with coming games that will come out I really dislike the idea of this. I would wait and see what prices are when you come to the states because in a couple of months you may be getting near the time the newer cards are coming out and the current gen cards may be cheaper.

I have just sent the seller of the 460 a message re-offering the USD 90 price. If he agrees and if the card is still available, I will test it and take it. Otherwise, I will wait for couple of months. The problem with waiting and buying new, is that you are always tempted by the upper best bargain, like for example the msi 7850 is selling now for around 180 on some sites in the US. The USD 90 will be a good bang for buck if the card was in good shape. He might say, 100!! dont know then how I will react :)

It's always tradeoff between price and performance. Besides performance, the GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 650 Ti consumes less power. You can save on a electricity bill.

I would try and stretch to 2 Gigabyte model if you can.

Hi guys, the seller of the EVGA 01G-P3-1370-TR Geforce GTX 460 (Fermi) 1GB DDR5 has just replied to me accepting to sell at USD 100.

To be honest after seeing benchmarks and what you have written. I am inclined to get the new 650 ti, OR is the 460 now a good deal? I wish he can accept the USD 90 to make it a better deal.

As to performance, just check the link I provided above. As to price, that's up to what you can afford and that's up to you.

You know you can run an energy efficient light bulb and that would save more money on electric bill LOL. A GPU you for playing games not saving on electric bill LOL.

Just get the GTX 460 it's a better deal and the fact is the GTX 460 has a proper memory bus width and the 650ti is crippled.

Offer him $80 for the card. GTX 460 has greater mem bus but is also quite a power hog. If you can get it for $100 or $80, have a solid PSU and you TRUST the guy. Go for it. GTX 460 is better in my opinion 256 bit

The GTX 460 is actually not a power hog at all.

mmmm :) Trust! well I dont know the guy per say. He advertised his card as barely used for 2 months with mimimal gaming. He said he received a radeon 7970 for Xmas, and he is selling this.

anort3, regarding the benchmark, i wonder if they compared the 256 bit version or 192 bit with gtx 650 ti!

Taking that I was getting a gigabyte model of the 650ti, would that mean the difference is even higher?
Will the evga 256 bit 1 GB overclock better then Gigabyte 650ti or that is luck based?
I am getting this as second card at home (casual games on this second PC), for my main HTPC (casual games as well) I am getting either a 660 or 660ti.
so, I am trying to get a good deal as possible. a great percentage of my second pc is used parts, so another used part will make the deal. But I think he reached his best offer at 100 USD.
Little bit torn here since the gtx 650 ti has this average 15% faster benchmark results depending on benchmark of course.
as for power, I have a used thermaltake toughpower 600 watts. at idle a 10 watts difference wont matter. at peak, i rarely play and if I did use it at peak it wont be for long, so the 40-50 watts difference for short periods wont kill my electricity bill. But still it is a factor over the life span of the computer.

from benchmarks it seems the 650ti is "much" better in games in DX11? (or am i mistaken)
And another thing, was reading about this FPB thing, would fashing the newer bios make the gtx 460 closer to the 650 ti or is this similar to any normal overclock through provided tools!?

That comparison is the 256bit 1GB model just like the one I have. Also the GTX 460 is an amazing overclocker while the GTX 6xx series is not. I have run my EVGA GTX 460 1GB at 825-1650-2000 from the day I bought it 2 1/2 years ago with no problems at all. Stock is 675-1350-1800. This basically makes my GTX 460 into a GTX 560 since the GTX 560 ( not Ti ) is just a highly optimized and overclocked GTX 460.

I believe the FPB thing you are referring to is EVGA's free performance boost? They did that when they realized literally every single GTX 460 was underclocked at 675-1350-1800 and all of the cards would run at higher speeds with no downside. You can still overclock on top of that. All the FPB did was make the cards faster stock.

Games I max at 1920 x 1080 with a overclocked GTX 460 1GB. ( and a 4.5Ghz 2600K )

Bioshock 1 + 2
Dead Island
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Skyrim + Obivion + Morrowind
FEAR 1+2+3
Fallout 3 + NV
Far Cry 1 + 2
Half Life 2 + EP1 + EP2
Just Cause 2
Mass Effect 1+2+3
STALKER SOC+COP+CS
The Walking Dead
Wargame European Escalation
Dragon Age Origins + 2
Dead Space 1 + 2

Games I have to turn some eye candy off.
Metro 2033

That should give you an idea what the card is capable of. I dont play games like BF3 or COD but I would imagine the card might struggle a bit with those types of games. Also the newer games like Far Cry 3 would only be playable on lower settings. So if your like me and tend to buy games when they are on sale at Steam or Origin the GTX 460 might still be a decent buy for you. Of course if you want the latest games with all the eye candy turned on then you should be looking a a GTX 660 Ti / HD 7950 level card anyway.

Thanks for the detailed info. But for games, this will be the same for the gtx 650 ti, or is that much better?
I wouldnt mind trying crysis 3 on medium settings at around 720p resolution on this gtx 460 or COD. Would they play fine at HD quality? or even 1080p but lower settings?
I doubt that I will be able to perform much testing on the card when making the deal, but any advice on methods of testing a used VGA card? What easy tools to use? run a game? temperatures?

Look the stock GTX 650 is slightly faster than the stock GTX 460 1GB. I am just telling you what an overclocked GTX 460 1GB is capable of. As is, my GTX 460 performs like a stock GTX 560.

Anandtech seems to be down right now but just go there and choose GTX 560 vs GTX 650 to see how an overclocked GTX 460 is vs a stock GTX 650. The 650 will not overclock to the same percentage the 460 will. I have seen some people run up to 900-1800-2000 clocks on the 460.

It's you that has to pick. We can only give you extra information to help you make up your mind. As I said if you want the newest games to run well you need to be looking at a minimum GTX 660 Ti / HD 7950 level card.

I have been very happy with my 460 and have been saying I was going to upgrade for some time now. It still plays everything I throw at it so I have not been able to justify it though. I am still debating on a GTX 670 or waiting on the GTX 7xx series.

Thanks anort3, I will have to proceed from here. Hope the guys will go down to USD 90 but he has aleady made an effort to make it at 100. And as I said, I am planning to get a 660ti for my first HTPC. So there is no need to just pay a lot of money on all PCs.
