New gpu and screen wont find it

Hello!

So my friend bought new gpu and cpu, what he didnt upgrade was motherboard(around 4-5 years old)
After installing the new cpu and gpu screen wont display and keyboard wont get any light.

Things we tried:
GPU on my comp = worked perfectly
with old cpu + new gpu = screen still cant find anything (not even start message)
taking 1 of 2 rams off = nothing, still runs but wont display screen

and after these, we noticed the pci-e slot is 2 but the gpu was designed pci-e 3 (gtx 960)

Any idea what would be the proplem?

+ friend already gave away his old gpu so we cant try with it. I had one old extra but its only dvi output and his screen is only for hdmi ._. so cant test that out.

They have adapters to go from HDMI to DVI and vice versa. They usually come with the gfx cards. But we can't help you much w/o knowing the specs of the system. CPU, motherboard, gfx card, power supply make/model, etc...
