Hey guys so I'm looking into buying the ASUS RX 460 Strix OC 4GB edition to upgrade my old build. My question is this:Will this card or any of the newly released GPUs play on an old 775 motherboard? My PSU is a Coolermaster GX 650 so I'm good on power and the motherboard has the PCI-e x16 albeit be 1.1,

My problem is that I've seen people mention online that their Legacy Bios based motherboards didn't support some UEFI ready GPUs.

Specs:Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4Ghz
Gigabyte P41T-D3P
Asus R7 260x 2GB
Corsair 4GB XMS3 1600Mhz DDR3
Coolermaster GX 650

Yes it will work but your CPU is very outdated, you should try to overclock it or buy a new CPU + motherboard + RAM first, then upgrade the GPU.

That CPU ussualy overclocks pretty well, you should try to do that before upgrading, another option is to sell the entire machine and buy a new one, also 4GB of ram is not enough but if you planning to upgrade or sell it's not a problem. Don't spend money on GPU until you get a newer generation CPU / Motherboard / Ram.

Here is a guide to overclock q6600, there are many good guides, watch all of them before you start overclocking and you should have a good aftermarket cpu cooler to do it.

An upgrade of that scale would set me back badly right now =(.In reality I just want to get rid of this 260x which has been freezing my system for the past 2 years.

I've thought about OC'ing the cpu but I'm worried since I've been gaming on it for 7+ years and having done some research on the subject of degradation and what not I fear that the CPU might not take tinkering with it very well.

I have somewhat of a farfetched plan to upgrade next year after seeing what AMD has to offer but right now I just really wanna get rid of my current gpu.

Are you sure that the 260x is freezing the system? It could be something else? 260x is new compared to the rest of the system so it shouldn't be the cause of the problem. Also even if you buy a better GPU it will be severely bottlenecked by the old CPU so you won't gain much.

Those CPU's are very durable, i ran it overclocked at 3,2 Ghz for 6 years and it worked like a charm, then i sold it and the new owner was happy with it.

Yep 100% sure it's the card. This is a common issue with the 260x,there have been plenty of threads here describing this issue,I know because I've looked at all of them for a solution =(

I'm aware of the severe bottleneck,I wanna buy the card however with keeping in mind a possible future complete upgrade.I wanna buy it now that the money is around 😛

I'll take your word on the durability of the Q6600.I might look more into OC this thing.
